I've decided their plan sucks. It limits me to 15Gb a month which i run out real soon through the month. Also it's set so that they disable my hosting if I go over the 15Gb limit. Which it did last month, and they "forgot" to turn it on on the 1st. Grrrr. Lost over 3286289569815689.362 visitors that day.

I'm thinking of transferring but not sure how? Do I register at another hosting service first? and then I go to the domain registrar and change the nameserver? I dunno what I'm talking about, complete n00b at transferring domains to another server. :helpsmilie:

If you don't want too long of a downtime, you should register another hosting plan first, yes.

I, personally, am happy with my current hosting even if, apparently, some people have had problem with them. I don't know anything about Prohosting, though.

No.

1) Backup all files and databases.
2) Register your new host.
3) Transfer the DNS of your domain to the new host.
4) Upload all the files.
5) Recreate the database(s) (same name, username and password)
6) Modify the connexion infos to the databse(s) in the config file(s) of your script(s).
7) Double check the paths (www.domain.com/directory).

That's a good start. Worst case scenario, you have to reinstall some script (but you have the backuped databse(s)) and you may have to change a few things manually in them, like some paths.

Feel free to ask if there's something unclear

Thanks a lot for your help Fredto!
for number 3. That's where I get into trouble as it's new waters for me. How do i transfer the DNS to the new host? I'm moving from prohosting to hostgator btw
Do I go and do the changes at my prohosting control panel, or at the hostgator control panel? or at the registrar... which I think is network solutions. eeeeek. so lost. so confuzzled.

Where did you buy your domain? At Prohosting?

If you did buy it there, you might want to consider a transfer, not just a DNS "redirection" (for lack of a better term). Now, transfering the domain might costs you some bucks depending on the company.

You, usually, just erase the old DNS and enter the new ones in your registrar panel then "import" your domain in your new hosting company panel.

Hey! I managed to get to my dns setup page and entered my new nameservers. But it looks like it still is pointing to my old provider because it's still the same page, eventhough on my new server i haven't uploaded anything. could it be my isp's fault to update dns?

btw. transferring... does that mean my new hosting would have contacted the old and transferred all my files to their servers? wow. wish i did that. but i want to start from scratch actually.

You might try ipconfig /flushdns. Also, changing nameservers take time to take effect. That's DNS propagation. That is from my experience. Usually it is between a couple of hours up to a day.

DNS changes can take up to 5 days depending on where you regged and people's ISPs.

How is it their fault if you break the contract? Just upgrade your plan and as 15gb/mo you should consider moving onto a VPS.

It is their fault because they have an automated system that should have reenabled my website on the 1st if I had gone over the monthly bandwidth the previous month. At least that's what they say.

I also think 15gb/mo is not that great of a deal nowadays, compared to other services. Although I admit it was my fault to have got conned into using them in the first place.

You are right about the 5 days thing. Mine is still loading pages that I have hosted on Prohosting. Eventhough from my registrar it says it's pointing towards my new hosting.

15gb bandwidth limits you a great deal. I would never go below 50gb now due to the fact that anything less can become a problem at a later date.

Plus, 7gb space 75gb bandwidth isn't bad for $15 a month.

Not really, unless you're running high traffic websites (proxys, image uploadsm forums) you don't need 15gb transfer.

del.icio.us did it to me, and also lifehacker simultaneously. It's bittersweet. My site isn't even graphics intensive. 15gb is just not enough.
