I am starting a CPA site and I have an idea on how to offer incintive's to the visitors. I want to get them to sign up for a mailing list. In the past, I have used Mailman, the GNU Mailing List Manager. However, with all the double opt in rules and the ability to make a nice looking HTML newsletter that can double as a text only version, I don't know where to start.

Are there any really good Open Source packages out there?

What do you use and what are you thoughts on it?

Thanks!

Maybe I should clarify this a little.

I am interested in the right way to handle a double opt in mailing list for affiliate related websites. What software would allow me to do this?

I found this one, http://tincan.co.uk/phplist and it looks interesting. Wish the sign up was simplier.

Any advice or direction would be appreciated.

I tried out a "lot" of opensource and paid programs... however, running your own email server is not worth it. I recently purchased a subscription of aweber to manage my newsletter and I couldn't be happier. I'd recommend you to do the same too.

However, if you can't pay for aweber right now, I'd suggest you to take a look into dadamail. It's perhaps the best of the free (and even paid scripts) out there with only downside being that it is coded in perl.

Do not attempt to do the mailings yourself on your own server, period. You can try, but if you get a list of any decent size, you will have trouble with deliverability. That is, 20-30% of your messages will simply never get to the recipient.

What you want to be looking at is autoresponder services, who offer unlimited broadcast mailings and manage all of the server resources needed for a large, growing mailing list.

There are a number of good providers. I have used several.

Here are those which I recommend:

Aweber - http://JoeLloyd.biz/Recommends/Aweber (This is who I use now and has the best deliverability by far. This is my aff link, their direct site is aweber.com )

GetResponse - http://www.getresponse.com (Also very good)

Email Aces - http://www.emailaces.com (I've heard good things about them but they are a smaller company from what I understand)
