This thread is to discuss the worst experience you've ever had with a hosting company.

I'll start mine off with Managed.com (acquired by WebHostPlus). I've been with them before.. so last month I decided to get a server because they were okay when I was with them last time. I wasn't aware that they were acquired by WebHostPlus though at the time of my purchase.

It took them two days to send me my server information after their "order received" confirmation email. And that was only because I had to email the server administrator who told me to email their support to get it. So anyway, I took the information and tried to log in root but the password was incorrect. Had to email support again and a guy resetted the password for me.

So I login and everything seems to work fine then I see a message that says that my cPanel license expired. I'm thinking "WTF..?"

I sent them another email to get my server licensed and have cPanel installed. The support guy said he'll do that asap for me.

2 days later, I emailed him again and he says that the server administrator will do it when he returns from lunch. A few hours later, I get emailed by the server administrator telling me my server is licensed and ready to go. I had to leave so I wasn't able to check on it.

That night, I checked on the information and the server was STILL unlicensed. I emailed the support guy again and he gave me the run-around email saying he'll do it in the morning when he gets in the office.

10-20 run-around emails later (a week), the support guy tells me that if I would've opened a support ticket, my server would've been licensed and working properly now. THEIR server administrator was the guy that told me to email them to get my server licensed so I'm not sure what he's talking about. Plus, we have to email their support to get an account for their ticket system.

Moving on, I emailed them for a refund and luckily for me, it was processed within a few days. Many other customers (on WHT) aren't so lucky though.

So that's my bad experience with a hosting company. Feel free to share yours

I remember my very first host for my personal site never backed up anything, had a server crash, lost all and never told me! I then had to phone their premium rate line, wait in a queue then find our what happened!

I'm currently broke, but I should start getting some funds soon, so I'm stuck with free hosting... yep... that means this is gonna get ugly:

1: 3 hosts died... they just died, no messages, no warnings, backups? What are they?

2: I requested an account on a post for host free host (this means I did the required posts) it's been over a month... still waiting. For some reason I gave up with them.

3: My current host *not for long!* I signed up and was approved quickly. I had high hopes that this host would not be total crap till a few months from now. So anyway, I log into the Cpanel... and it won't let me in. The admins/mods give me NO support, except "I think it's working" while it isn't. So after about a week the admin says it's because of the spam on the server, so now they need to close the forums for a while and downgrade all accounts. By the way; I still can't get into Cpanel.

So, does anyone recommend some good free hosts?

My worst and best experiences are both with the same host, asmallorange.

Several months ago I was having problems with addon domains. So they decided to "fix" it when I asked - they ended up whiping out several of my sites so that data was like 3 months old. They didn't even solve the initial problem. I had a backup, but it was like 2 weeks old. Sucked.

But that's the only negative thing I have. Typically they have great customer support.

My worst was with a very small "backyard" host. Constant server problems and lack of website support.
That was a year ago, to this day their website still says "coming soon.." - I think that says something about them!

My worst experience is going on right now with liquid web. I've been waiting days now to order extra bandwidth for my dedicated server but I haven't heard from a dedicated sales manager yet. In the meanwhile, I am getting charged now $15 per 10gb I use, since I am over. I use close to 80 gigabytes a day, so I'm going to have some nice over charges. Hopefully I will be able to get out of them because I've attempted to contact and order a new plan and they have been slow on the response (wouldnt be surprised if it was on prupose so that I do get over charges).

There are *very* cheap hosting packages out there now. The market has driven the prices downwards. I'd reccomend paid hosting over free any day.

Back to the thread subject,

My host overloaded the hdd's and all data was lost. Backups that were meant to be kept weren't.

Worst experience was probably with a company called aetherihosting. Went with them because they were active on a forum I frequent. Quite a few people signed up actually. Constant downtimes, the support guys don't answer the support tickets, etc. It's 2 guys running the show on their spare time pretty much

Lypha - they wouldnt refund my money (that have a 30 day satisfaction guarantee)

I emailed all of their departments talked to support on ICQ and everything.

They waited till after 30 days were up and wouldn't refund my cash (I paid for awhole year)

So I filed a Paypal claim and they refunded me.

1and1.com was the absolute worst... I can't even explain how terrible my experience was... I CAN say that spending 4 hours on the phone talking to people who don't understand english, working for an "american company" sucks though. It's not their fault - yet you feel like yelling at someone because your site is down due to the last guy who didn't speak english messing with the DNS records... then, to top it off, they try to CHARGE YOU for that time you spent trying to explain to them why your site was down by "fixing" something they screwed up. Man... this isn't even 2% of what I've had to deal with while hosted under them... ughhhh...

oh yeah... in the end - my site never even seen the light of day under their Hosting Package because if you call them - you spend 2 hours on the phone, minimum... if you email them - it takes 3-5 days, so they say... actually the first emails I sent (2) took over a week each to get replies.

A rediculous company... the absolute WORST experience EVER.

www.dzones.com I used them years ago, horrible support, lots of downtime, would never recommend nor use them again. Sometimes my site would be down for a few days and I couldn't contact anyone.

I haven't had any bad experiences with any hosts, probably due to the fact that I'd beat my brother up if anything happened (he hosts me )

Being charged twice a month at $24.95 by HostGator. I've called them three months in a row to let them know. I can't get my money back. It now turns into HostGator credit - which I don't want any more. So now I am stuck with them for at least another 4 months.

I used to have a shared hosting account at SurfSpeedy. When I visited the site once, I noticed they had made their plans cheaper but they never e-mailed me about it.
So I opened a ticket to ask them to change my plan so I would pay less per month and be able to host more domains.
The ticket remained unanswered for about a week so I replied to the ticket and waited a few more days.

Meanwhile I found another host (Site5) so I decided to switch.
I replied to the same unanswered ticket, about 2 weeks after opening it, saying I will be switching to another host if they can't even answer my support tickets.
Within an hour I got a reply only with the words 'account deleted'.

My first ever webhost. Hostezy.com. They are now a dead company. I was a total n00b at the time, so I was like WOW! Unlimited Space/Bandwidth is totally cool. 5 USD domains are cool too! So I signed up for a LIFE account paying 99.95 USD I believe.

Didn't enjoy it a bit. The PIII server crashed everytime there were 100+ users on the forum and eventually I tried to move out. The host decided to keep the domain and run, which made me lose a heck lot of traffic.

Currently, I'm testing out DreamHost for 6 months. I'm planning a move to HostGator, WireNine, DTH, or something along those lines early next month.
