I hope for the poeple here they will never get a issue with THE PLANET.

update your cc on time, if you do it once too late and have a old email account at billing then ITS YOUR OWN FAULT.

they did shutdown my server and i had a updated email account in orbit.

the excuse i got was ITS YOUR OWN FAULT YOU NEED TO UPDATE BILLING!!!

So people be warned, im using layeredtech now and im very happy.

We're currently using Liquidweb, and I'll be the first to say that their support is probably better, if not at the top with Theplanet.

Softlayer.com, they are basically the people from ThePlanet that left and decided to build their own dedicated server company I have been with them for a while now. One of the best hosts I've been with.

I currently host my sites on a smallish personal reseller at Hosting Department, and have been really happy with them. I've been using them since just before Christmas of last year, and have had almost no trouble, received excellent support and very little downtime.
However I may switch to a VPS or dedicated server sometime soon, if any of my sites start to grow.

As said before, PowerVPS is the way to go.

I used to run a web hosting company and I can really tell these guys are great. The best about them is the fact that the servers are located at the Equinix datacenter which is arguably the best DC out there.

I use PowerVPS for my websites. I've had a few (not always) brush off replies to email requests, but I know just enough to push the right buttons and they usually hand the issue off to an admin or upper level support guy. These guys are top notch.

Not many companies will optimize your MySQL settings or harden your VPS for free. These guys rock! In fact, as I grow, I plan on getting a fully dedicated server with Virtuozzo through them. Yea, it's a little more pricey than the other guys, but the ability to restore the server or move it to another should it develop major hardware issues is a big deal. Not to mention the managed support they provide is excellent.

In the past, I've had a few linux servers with The Planet. I love their network and the boxes were rock solid. I really disliked their ticket responses. However, I found if you would call Tech Support, you got Top Notch service. Maybe I should see if they would like for me to show them how much money they would save in Long Distance if they had better ticketing support. ;-)

BTW, you mentioned EV1's support being better than The Planet. That's pretty funny since the two companies merged a while back. ;-)

I host with Dreamhost right now, but I'm going to move to a dedicated server sometime this year. I'd recommend Dreamhost for starting out though, they've been pretty solid for me.

I have been using  bluehost.com hosting and never have any problem with them.

Stay away from  SurfSpeedy hosting as my experience with them is very bad and used to have constant problems with their hsoting and support.

I have shared accounts at Dreamhost and Gatorhost, a reseller account at Elitehosts.com, and a dedicated at ThePlanet. I highly recommend elitehosts out of those four. Gator and ThePlanet have been really good too.

I recommend staying away from Dreamhost, they have too many restrictions when programming PHP.
