I once had a large forum of mine that got hit by a Ddos attack. My host, shut it down within one hour and no real damage was done. How about you?

Yea, I had some problems with my coin forum back before I converted it to vBulletin. I had someone deface it a couple of times, which is fairly common for a phpBB board.

I have had the ddos attacks on 2 of my sites. It was horrible and occurred like every other weeks. Since moving to liquidweb i havent had a problem. They only use 60% of their servers for customers for this specific reason.

I have had a lot of spammers setup scripts through old phpbb and vb sites. It is really hard to track them down but some minor changes to the server helps stop them.

The worst hack was because some of my mods used the same passwords on my site as they did on another board. Although most modern boards encrypt the password by some method in the DB, its still possible for a not so honest admin to hack around that.

I make it a policy now to remind members to change thier password periodically, make sure its not the same one they use on another site. Same with the email address they registered with. I also ask members to use alphanumeric passwords with at least 7 characters.

I have a ddos attacking going on at this very second
www.msxsecurity.com is the site- You will notice the "click here to enter" which validates if its a bot or a person.
Its not cheap for ddos mitigation, so unless you can justify the big bucks for protection, its best to just say fsck it and wait till they get bored. For me, I would lose more money by the site being down then if I wasnt to pay the fees.
-as far as being "hacked" I had it happen once, but not to me really. This was when one of my other forums was on a shared server, and someone hacked the entire server (so all 200 sites on there or whatever got owned, not just mine)

One of my arcade sites was hacked. The hack basically re-directed my site to another persons site. I had just bought the site and just transferred the files and db to my server. Within 1 day of doing that, my site was hack. It was basically due to a few directories not being CHMODed properly.

My server was compromised via an old script on my server. The culprit used the server to send tons of spam. Data center discovered it quickly, shut them down and patched the server.

I co-owned a site that supposedly got hacked into a few times. I dont think it was really a hack situation though, more of a matter of the other owner screwing things up and blaming it on a hacker.

Havent been hacked on my current sites and pray that it never happens.

When I was owner of a large forum, we were DDoSed multiple nights by rival forums (stupid, yes I know).

And on one of my newer sites earlier this year, we were hacked by a Turkish group (so they claim), but I believe it was a wide-scale attack on multiple sites and mine just happened to be in the group. They just replaced the index file with their splash and made it very difficult to remove.

I was hacked once and I lost a huge number of sites and revenue, it was both my own fault and the hosts.

I didn't have any backups on my own computer but that was mainly just because I had changed computer the month before and didn't have a chance to download backups again.

The host was managed and they were meant to take care of backups on an extra server I had just for backups, but they didn't even have it setup so no backups were available on the server.

I got a few old backups for a few sites, but a majority were lost.

I think that was in 2002, I have totally changed the way I do backups now and I check everything regularly to make sure its working like it should

There is nothing worse that can happen if you make your living online, I know that set me back a lot and I thought about giving it up and just working offline again.

I have never been hacked. For my forums I've used both phpbb and vbulletin, and security-wise, both have held out. I guess I'm lucky then.

Yes, I have had a couple of Ddos attacks against one of my servers in the past and a hell of alot of hacking attempts according to the logs.

It is really annoyingand and a bit scary, but now most have stopped.

My forum has been targeted a few times. The DOS attacks fail as I have APF firewall installed. If any damage is done, I simply revert to the backup that is automatically made each day.

Yup, one of my servers used to have a pretty decent forum on it. DDOS was crazy. But then I got admins to take care of it. I really dislike DDOSing a LOT.
