Secure it more of course, and reload the files.

Knock on wood - none of my sites has ever been hacked. I've had some clients' sites get hacked but usually it was social engineering. One of my clients replied to an email from "Ebay" about his "Account information." That was about 3 years ago and he's still suffering from that ordeal. Just goes to show that the most effective hackers aren't even computer geeks neccessarily - they just have a good idea.

Anyway, back on topic. I've never been hacked but I am the only person with access to our sites. I change the passwords regularly and have a random password generator that creates long, secure passwords with symbols, numbers, upper & lower case, etc. I also try to patch software as soon as I see a new version is available.

Someone managed to exploit a script on one of my sites, install some sort of web-based FTP, and change the Google Ads to their own.

Of course I reported it to Google and had it all fixed.

My main site (MTB-Wales.com) was hacked a while ago when another user on the same server had forgotten to upgrade their copy of AWStats.

As a result, the hacker got into the box and wiped every index.* file on the machine, including mine.

Fortunately I had a back-up and figured out a way of blocking the attack.

An old phpBB forum that I haven't even looked at for a few months was "hacked" by robotic members posting all sorts of illegal stuff. I just closed the forum.

Never had anything up long enough to be worth hacking, but a friend's site got did recently. Someone came in dropped us from admin to member and added their adsense to the top of the site. Wasn't very well done though as we hadn't had adsense there to start with so we noticed something wrong first time on the site before we noticed we'd lost admin access. A quick reset of the usergroups in the database, banning of the users IP and two emails (one to google and one to the school) and problem seems fixed.

That's not being hacked really. It's just spam bots that attack forums, blogs, and anything with a comment form.

One of my sites got hacked really hard. It was flucked up for a long time and killed my income. I went from an easy 5$ a day to 1-2$. You can imagine how pissed I was.

I've had a few of my older sites DDOSed a couple of times, and one really old phpBB forum defaced, although I didn't really see the point in it as it only had abour three members, and had been up a couple of hours. I simply uninstalled and reinstalled it.
Never had anything too bad/serious happen though. I guess I've been pretty lucky.

That's not too bad.
Make sure you have backups all the time; that really helps.
