I apologize for this simple question but i cannot seem to find the answer through google or searching the forum.

I just recently registered a new domain through microsoft office small business live and my website is active. Two things concern me.

When the site is viewed, i am automatically redirected to (for example) http://website.com/default.htm instead of just www.website.com. #1) how do i get the www. back in the url. I know from research it is not necessary, but would like it there anyway. Also, what do i have to do so that default.htm is not shown on the homepage url. i just want a traditional www.name.com.

I appreciate anyone who responds as I cannot seem to find the answer to this

This is not a HTML issue but more to do with the server that your website is running on (which is almost definitely Windows as you are using Microsoft). I don't know much about Windows servers but the problem is definitely related to the server automatically redirecting people to default.htm - contact Microsoft about it and tell them you don't want default.htm displaying in the URL - they might change the settings for your account on their server.

I think that you have to learn things about 301 redirect.

The answer is not to use Microsoft (for anything), least of all web hosting. Microsoft tried to introduce their own proprietary version of HTML which thankfully failed.

Find another web host - anyone but Microsoft! Lol

I'm also a newbie so this may not be correct, but with my hosting company, the default.htm page will show until you have an index page uploaded to your server.

ask them for information i.e. what is your FTP default remote directory and FTP host address
using your user name and password login to FTP and replace default.htm with your own index.html
