I'm guessing it's not a hosted server, right? It would be pretty hard to have 100 GB on a host somewhere.

Take the hard drive out of the old server and put it in the new one. Don't mess with the drives already there for the operating system and all that, just add a new purely data drive.

It really is a simple thing, but it s a lengthy one.

FTP download your content from the old host. FTP upload your content to the new host. I'd suggest doing it overnight when you're not using your machine.

There isn't a better way to pull this off...unless you can gain access to either the old server or the new one such that you can FTP from one to the other.

You can take the hard drives out of one box and put them in a new one, to physically transfer the data at its storage point.

You can copy the data down from one server and then up to another, to logically transfer it through FTP "replication".

There might be a third option, but this only applies sometimes. How did you get 100 GB on your hosted server in the first place? If it's generated by automated process, you can regenerate the data.

Those are your options.

Since you don't have physical access to the server, FTP is the only way.

You should always keep everything backed up at your house. For in the future, get an external hard drive.

Rather than focus on the time it will take, focus on the lesson that the time taken is going to teach you: make sure you do your homework before you select a host. If you don't...well...this is what happens.

But based on your answers and your data size, I'd suggest to you that the reason you think that your host is terrible may not be your host but may be the requirements that you have for your host. 100 GB worth of storage space is borderline dedicated server (at the very least, VPS). I'm not sure what you're spending, but if what I'm thinking is correct, you might want to up the financial ante.

What kind of servers are they?

If you're using RAQ SUN-Cobalt servers then you can use CMU/raqbackup.sh
otherwise check with manufacturer if backup is part of OS

Is there anychance you can ask your host to transfer all the content to your new host? They would ask you to pay though.

a lot of hosting company will do this for you .. and they only charge a very small amount .. but I surprised no-one has mentioned FXP ... no thats not a typo ... there is a way to ftp direct from one server to another ... I do it all the time .. however you have to make sure that both hosts are compatible ... so it may not work ... but well worth checking out ... I have got 50 - 200 MB /sec transfer rates doing it this way so it could take just minutes

lots of ftp software has this built in .. but I recommend FlashFXP ... heres their tutorial for site to site transfers ... btw yes it is a paid product .. but I liked it so much I bought the ... hang on .. no that was a advert I saw thr other day
