FTP problem during upload

I use ws ftp to send files to my server.

When I am at home I can upload any files easily. When I am at work small files upload just fine and then I appear to time out when uploading larger files.

I use the same copy of the program, have tried loading new versions, but am using different computers.

Any ideas or where to start, I have never had this problem before in 10 years.

Thank you for the suggestions.

My first guess would be difference in bandwidth, not just of the local computer but the ISP's servers. Also difference in traffic, as many businesses go for cheap ISPs and don't understand why their service is so slow (too much traffic, not enough bandwidth server-side).

Hi,
I got the same problem. I use the same software, I use the same ISP at work.

I enquired with a network certified frend, he says that at work, you might not be connected directly to the adsl modem. It might be connected to a firewall, a switch and then to your pc. SO with all these nodes, you can at times be cut off. The worst can happen if the wiring is poor.

might be there are more people sharing the same line and the line may be congested at times.

This could also be related to the security software/firewalls in use at the office. Many offices have a hardware firewall in conjunction with a software firewall such as used in XP SP2, depending on the ftp mode in use by the server (active/passive) it may be possible to transfer a small file but not a larger one. Virus or additional security software of the workstation can also impact this.

Try switching your ftp client from automatic to passive mode and see if that helps. Also try disabling the Software firewall or virus software prior to the transfer to see if that affects it.

Try queueing your files by placing them in temporary queue first and then dragging them up to the server location. Your preferences at home may already be set to 'automatic queueing'. When not set, uploads will usually terminate upon the first hiccup in the transfer...

Other than that, see if you particular 'ftp' is supported by help forums. The usually have better answers because they allow you to upload copies of your session, which really helps...

Good luck,
The Lion.

Thank you for the really good suggestions. I still have not gotten the problem worked out. I have learned that I can download files from my server normally. When I go to upload however any large file times out.

I am guessing at this point. Any new suggestions with this bit of information I added.

Thank you!

Try the following at work.

In the 'Session Profile' window that appears after you click 'Connect', click the 'Advanced' button and make sure that 'Passive' is checked.

This is necessary when you're behind a NAT (Network Address Translation) firewall.
