I am very knowledgeable about hosting due to trial and error. I have had service from many different companys including 1&1, Start Logic, iPower, go Daddy etc... In the end i have came to the conclusion that using my own server within my home is extremely more economical and there is a lot more versatility to what you can do. Now that i have my own server i will NEVER go back to a third party to host anything. There is only one downside to maintaining your own server and that is SSL. A certificate with a good size encryption could cost anwhere from 150 bucks to 500 bucks. That is the only downside, but SSL may not be required for all webmasters. I find it neccesary for email. Othr then that i wouldnt need it.
Also Whym nice post but the whole VPS and dedicated server idea is not economical. Also the fact that the server is not a local one makes it hard for a webamster to have complete control over there investment. If you have checked the prices for a dedicated server thru a company, they are outrageous. I would never even consider it even if i had a large popular site. For the monthly price of a dedicated server you you could have your own server beside you at home forever.

I am sorry but i have to honestly say you are foolish and very mis informed.
While yes you would obviously have greater control over the server, BUT unless you have a very high speed connection UPS and the like its pointless.
ALSO if you are running ANY kind of server off a home connection you are almost DEFINATLY in violation of your ISP contract whom can cut you off without notice because of it.
While it costs more u pay for what you get, shared hosting.. if you find the right host for you, is relativly cheap and a good option.
If you pay for a dedicated server in a decent datacenter it is IMPOSSIBLE to beat the standard without being very uneconomical because to pay out the amount it would cost to set up the enviorment would be more than you would pay for a normal one.
A host have an affiliation house their servers in the best DC in the USA, which has uniteruptable power supply so your server will never go own due to power failier, the high speed connection which has redundancy so if one goes down it simply goes on a totally seperatre connection and the server its self will be a beast which would cost in parts alone $1000's.
Unless your website is for your dog dont host at home.
Also due to rising energy costs no doubt running a server computer 24/7 has an affect on your bill. i know my PC usage does.
Also note: i have to say the last sentence u said was just total BULL. I mean the one i work with builds servers from new, all new parts, the best of the best its worth the money, if you are paying say $100/month for a low end server it would take a minimum of a year to buy the parts to make an equivilent server, and then add on top the $50-120/month ISP charges to have a suitable connection, and then theres the power i mean come on
