Hello, basically I'm a new web designer/programmer and would like to mess with both php and asp.net. I'd like to keep it fairly cheap, don't need a huge bandwidth or huge storage either. I'm a broke student and need some reliable hosting.

Thanks.

Check gowebsite.com plans, they don't oversell and offer features you need.

russ, your needs are basic, so there should be lots of plans.
gowebsite.com seems to be ok, their plans all you need.

Generally speaking, cheap and reliable won't be found in the same sentence (unless not sneaks in) - particularly with respect to hosting.

It goes without saying that to get ASP.NET and PHP you'll need to take a look at Windows hosting. This is usually more expensive - for example we charge more for it since Windows OS etc. costs more than Linux.

For "messing" / development I'd recommend using your local computer really - much cheaper...

If you have something specific that you want to put online, that's when it becomes worthwhile spending money on some hosting service.

Damien actually had a good idea there. If you've got an XP Professional box (either 32-bit or 64-bit, although 32-bit is harder to configure), you can download and install PHP onto it and set up IIS to use it. There are plenty of tutorials and instructions online on how to do so.

ASP.NET is automatically installed on an IIS box by nature as well...you just have to Allow it within IIS (by default, it's Prohibited, so you'll see a 404 error with any .aspx pages).

If it's just for screwing around, this is the way to go...even if it's for something serious, this is a good idea since you can test on your local box, as I do, then upload the changes when they're done.

If you need a reliable host after that, check out www.sectorlink.com . They're where my dedicated box sits...it's been there 3.5 years.
