I am browsing for a webhost that can withstand digg/slashdot effect. What is it that brings down a website? Is it insufficient bandwidth, CPU, or sql queries?

Could be any of the three, actually. I'd say excessive CPU usage is most likely, but any of the three can cause it.

Also, make sure there aren't any holes in any of your scripts that leak resource. That's a big cause of problems as well.

If you want a host that can withstand a lot of traffic, check out www.sectorlink.com . I've been with them 5 years now and haven't had a problem that way. If you continue to have issues...well...it's your code. (They'll usually tell you if it is...I've had it happen once.)

Webhosting that do not oversell surely can withstand 1000 diggs right? or not?

The thing is i never used more than 100mb on my blog site. Bandwidth consumption is also low. B/w is perhaps not a great concern since I will have wp-cache plugin for wordpress.

I'm looking for a host that can withstand digg effect at most once per month. Not that I really wanted a digg effect - I prefer to be on stumbleupon and del.icio.us though.

Oh yes, I look for ruby on rails support too.
