I don't disagree with you, but I'd like to point out that it entirely depends what you're running on your site - if it's all static html with very few pictures etc. (therefore ~50k connections per day, rather than something like ~500k connections per day) then the overhead of running the site will be much lower than the kind of MySQL driven beast you're referring to.
It's true that if your site has even moderate scripting/DB backend work you're likely to need a high-spec hosting platform to cope with this kind of traffic.
The other point is that concurrent traffic is the important issue - not traffic at all (e.g. 50k visits at once is a big issue, but 2k visits per hour constantly throughout the day is much easier to handle - still not suited to shared hosting though!).
