I've noted some 'proxy' sites for sale. what are they and why would anyone want to own and develop them?

They are sites that hide your IP from the site you are visiting or allow you to bypass content filters by requesting the page for you.

A proxy is something that allows your to cloak or change your IP so that you can browse the web anonymously and/or unblock web pages that you normally couldn't access due to web filters or national restriction.

Well such websites are all over the place cuz of the ease of creating one. You just configure teh script a bit and that's it. After that you plce some ads to generate a good revenue.

Most ppl who run these type of website don't understand the resources such scripts require.
On the other side the hosts who do host such scripts for just a few dollars cramp a lot of these proxies onto a server and then the loads skyrocket.
