Hi there

Whats happening to people these days, there seems to be a lot of hishonestly on the net lately, i recenty got a domain with streamline and have been a customer of theirs for over 3 years, i paid for a domain and the hosting wasnt compatable with what i was trying to install so i asked for a refund, i said i would keep the domain name but could i have a refund on the hosting, perfectly reasonable and straight forward you would think.

Obviously i didnt get it, I got the old you broke the terms and conditions rule thrown back at me, not sure what rule im supposed to have broke, suffice to say i havent broken any rules, its just an excuse not to give me my money back, so over 3 years loyalty and what do you get in return, all i wanted was somone to be fair cant even do that it seems. I am v annoyed about this as its just my word against theirs and theres no way I can get my money back now, im not even bothered about the money, its just the dishonestly of it all thats annoyed me.

Well for the sake of £70 they have lost a customer and i would avoid them like the plague if i was you.

I'm not sure that they have any (legal) obligation to refund you for any period of service which you used, so a full refund (for the hosting) may be inappropriate - unless you specifically asked them before hand if their hosting would be suitable for installing 'x' application and it turned it that it wasn't etc.

However, in these circumstances many honest/decent hosting providers would be happy to provide you with a full refund for the hosting service, and those few that would not should at least be prepared to offer refund/credit for the unused period of your subscription.

So in short, I agree with you that they appear to have treated you unfairly - but obviously I can only say that on the basis of what you have said above... I wouldn't want to commit without knowing both sides

In future, I would recommend that you make it a priority to clarify with any potential provider exactly what their policy is in this situation - providers worth dealing with will be able to tell you

Out of interest, what application were you having trouble installing/using, and where have you chosen to taken your custom (if anywhere?) instead?

Hi there

Well i was trying to install a community script via webscribble.com, i did ask lots of questions to make sure this host was compatable, unfortuantly somthing called allow_call_time_pass_reference needed to be turned on, and steamline couldnt do this for me, as it would have affected other users on the same server which is fair enough, but i couldnt have forseen this kind of an error and any number of questions wouldnt have covered this problem.

Its just a question of fairness i think, I would have refunded the money, but as you say they are probably under no obligation to do so and hiding behind ur terms and conditions is bad form lol.

I decided to host with webscribblle themselves in the end, althought i am still considering finding another host uk based, i dont think its so easy to find a good host as ive tryed 123 reg.net and their customer service was v slow also.

So maybe some people could reccomend some good hosts, from experiance i think a 24/7 host with an option to live chat 24/7 would make a host more appealing to me.

I'm surprised that this is a requirement of any commercial software given that it's deprecated in PHP (I think since version 4.1.2 - i.e. ages ago!).

I'm surprised by that as well - most shared hosting configurations have the flexibility to enable the host to modify most settings (particularly related to PHP) on a domain-by-domain or account-by-account basis. I know that we certainly have the facility to do so, and (unfortunately) we're not in a unique position with that ability.

Yep, I agree. In case it was misconstrued above, that's basically what I was trying to say

Yep, I've heard plenty of bad things about 123reg support, although having not personally used them it wouldn't be appropriate for me to comment.

With regards to recommendations, obviously I'm not best placed to be giving those but hopefully someone else will come along and offer some suggestions for you.

Are you specifically looking for UK based hosting (i.e. UK servers) or is it just a preference to deal with a UK hosting company (but perhaps with servers elsewhere - namely US)... you'll probably find much wider choice with the latter, but there are still some UK hosts to consider
