Cause I'm a freaking idiot when it comes to DNS and getting it right, I need some help.

I'm trying to get the MX records, CNAMES and A Records all straightened out.

right now here's the setup:

A record:
@ points to our server IP (which I know is wrong, this should be the IP of our hosting company)
mail points to our server IP for our exchange server

CNAMES:
smtp - smtp.domain.com
mail - mail.domain.com
www - @
ftp - @

MX:
mail 0 - host: mail - mail.domain.com
smtp 10 - host: smtp - smtp.domain.com

Now, I know I need to change the A record and the CNAMES, but I'm not sure to what....

I want the @ to point to the godaddy hosting server and my mail to point to my exchange server. Problem being that when I change the @ host to the godaddy server, my mail doesn't come through.

I'm pretty sure I need to get rid of CNAMES, but to be honest, I'm confused as all hell about it.

Help? Anyone?

You are using DNS service from domain name control panel or using by the 3rd DNS? If you 'r using your DNS service, you will must add your domain into Add-on domain in hosting cpanel. And that time, your domain and hosting IP will make a handshake. Ok? Do you understand me?

nope, don't understand.

hosting is with GoDaddy, they have their own DNS Control Panel. I have full control over the IP/DNS information.

Where do you buy domain? (the same?) But I don't think you buy domain at the same GoDaddy.
Host don't have DNS control, only Domain Cpanel has DNS control. Domain use DNS to point to IP of Host.
