DNS alone is not the answer.

I'm no expert, but I think http://www.howtoforge.com/mirroring_with_rsync should the first step. Then you need failover DNS to have the domain point to the mirror when the main server is offline.

Keeping the data consistent between the mirror and the main site after the DNS failover kicks gets things complicated. One solution would be to keep using the mirror until you're ready to do a manual move to the main server.

Again, I'm no expert at this stuff, someone else might be able to give you better/more advanced advice.

In this site is explained how you can make 100.0% uptime, I don't want this. I want to make something like www.google.com.
The search engine google.com openes from the nearest location of the visitor
for example if he is in Romania he will open the site from Bulgarian server, if he is from United Kingdom, he will open the website from USA.

I have 100.0% uptime on my 2 servers by a statistics, and I don't need to do what you are talking about :=)

I will be waiting for answer

I believe that apache has information on how to do this with mod rewrite. I remember seeing something in there about mirroring

I have the same question about this.
We want to install a second server in the US with the same content as on the Dutch one, with our US visitors going to their local server.
Just wondered if you solved this, and how.

I haven't personally done this, but my guess is that you could use mod rewrite in apache combined with a geoip database (e.g. maxmind).

Then you would redirect people to the appropriate domain/subdomain. That sort of thing seems to be how many of them work like Google or php.net.

As I said, I haven't actually implemented this at all - but without taking the time to have a good Google on it, the above is my answer. If I get time at some point soon I may try research it further for you.

Hope that helps.

You could do it with maxmind. They use that on sourceforge.net, and it works quite well, but not all the time.
