Well I used to think Crosswinds.net was a long time ago. Then they start putting pop ups everywhere on user websites.
When I first went to Crosswinds you had unlimited space, one email, FTP account, a web based file manager and no banners.
Then free users were reduced to the webspace/online file manager and that was all. Plus the webspace carried pop ups and sometimes two and three a page.
Paid users would get the space, the email, the FTP access and no banners.
And then I found FreeWebz: http://members.freewebz.com/
Free hosting with no banner ads or pop ups. They do require a tiny little strip to be placed on each page of your site though that states this site is hosted at freewebz.com. It is really small though and when I was there you could put it anywhere on the page you wanted to.
Uptime was good but there are some drawbacks.
No FTP unless you want to pay a small monthly fee to use it. Also they offer a lot of other add ons for a fee.
They do give you a file manager but when I used them it only allowed for the upload of one item at a time. That was annoying.
Still though if you are looking for good free space with no banners/pop ups FreeWebz is great.

If you just want a FREE site, go to www.tripod.lycos.com.
If you want a domain and "real" site for less than $50 a year, go to http://www.freehostingweb.com

Hi Scriptures,
If you are looking for a host that supports MySQL, I recommend the following hosts (I have been a member at FreeWebspace for quite some time, and I have gotten very experienced in this field of free hosting. I guess you can say I bring great expertise. )
http://www.host.sk/ (however, they aren't accepting signups at the moment, but they've been up for a few years; a bit on the slow side; they offer ad-less hosting! )
http://www.xug.net/ (they've had pretty consistent uptime since they've been up, give them a try; at the moment, they offer ad-less hosting but they will implement ads soon.)
http://www.tripod.co.uk/ (I see that a few members have already mentioned them, and yes, they are reliable because they have corporate backing! The only qualm I have is that their ads are pretty annoying.)
http://www.spaceports.com/ (Another fine host that has been up for a few years because of large company backing. Recently, they've stumbled a bit and lowered the 5 GB of transfer down to 1 GB. However, this is more than enough, and their ads aren't the worst. Give them a shot.)
http://www.portland.co.uk/ (Portland is one of the hosts that have always been criticized. Offering only 100 MB transfer and deleting sites almost sporadically hasn't helped them. In six months, I have seen them hacked 3 times. Their FTP is, for a lot of the time, full [reached its limit of users] or down [which happens quite often with all their server problems]. This is not acceptable for a free host, and I wouldn't recommend them. However, you might need to give them a try in the end.)
I hope this helps you in your quest. Good luck!

I found one that wasn't mentioned and I found it just now. I signed up just to see what they are like and so far it is very promising.
This is what you get for free:
No adverts!
Reliable Unix server
50MB webspace
100MB monthly data transfer (bandwidth)
Use your own domain name (if you prefer)
Or use yourname.ableinternet.com
Apache file server
24/7 FTP access
CGI bin
PHP
If you are using your own domain they give you the DNS info. No redirects needed or used here.
This one seems like a winner but since I have an account there now as of a few minutes ago I will have to do some more testing to see for sure if they are as good as they seem.
Here is the url:

Hi Drache,
I've heard of them before. Recently, they cut down on the 100 MB monthly transfer, and now it's only 50 MB. Now, I have had great experience with free hosts, and I can tell you right now that it's only enough to finish testing and perhaps get a few hits (100 at max). And 100 MB of transfer has just gone down the drain. Now, with 50 MB, there is absolutely no way you're going to even finish testing it. I don't think this seems like a very good host.

Hi NeVeR,
I would forget about T35, if I were you. They have been known to support warez; they've shut down about 4 times since they were created (not a very long time); and lastly, they are just plain unreliable (lots of downtime). There have been a few complaints about their pop-under ads as well.

Hehe...would you recommend them to anyone looking for hosting?
And did you really host it on your own server for a while? That's pretty unprofessional of T35 to use other people's servers when they are desperate.
