Hi,

I'm posing this question to web hosters who rent dedicated servers to host their shared clients. Is it a concern to you whether the company from which you rent the dedicated server also does shared hosting? Are you less likely to get a dedicated server from such a company? If yes, why? Is it because you are protecting yourself from that company possibly stealing your shared hosting clients for themselves? Could it be because you would not want to support your competitor? Any other reasons?

Thank you for your insight.

I personally wouldn't get a server from a company that also offers shared hosting. Not because of conflict of interest, but I'd rather deal with a company that specializes in the servers I rent. A company whose sole purpose for being is to provide dedicated servers and related services and thats it. They tend to be a bit more knowledgable that way. So when you call support, you're not getting some level 1 tech who only knows how to change my password for me and that's about it.

I've used a company that does both and never had a concern. I know some of the folks there, so that helps a bit, but basic business ethics demands that they do NOT solicit your customers. I happen to know of one customer (former now--a real pain) who called them directly and wanted to switch to them--they refused based on it being unethical to do so. He left us both, but I appreciated their honor in this.

There are plenty of ehtical business people out there if you take some care in selecting them.
