It seems to me that it doesn't cost s a web host anything to offer unlimited "add on" domain names from cpanel. Is that right?

the more add-on domains a client uses the more potential resources will be consumed by each website under those domains. So yes, it does cost the web host for add-on domains.

Right, but if bandwidth, disk space, and transfer are limited then it shouldn't matter how many domains are offered, no?

But that might affect their ability to oversell.

You might actually use most of what you buy.

Ace, I've heard it can be bad for seo but this doesn't seem like it would be true.

It depends of the Control Panle. I don't know hoe does aCpanle works, but domain aliases should be pointed somewhere. Technically it might not be a problem but if the domains are just parked than it is easier that if they need to point to separate directories.

Perhaps something that might become expensive would be database connections if each domain had one and they started to add up. Can anyone confirm that mysql database connections can be a strain on the server?

well in theory a average server can support about 3000-6000 MySQL database connections without breaking down...

The connections themselves isn't a problem. It's the queries that get run on those connections that cuase problems. You could have 3000 connections each doing a singleton select from a database with no trouble at all. But if you had 3000 connections and half of them doing database intensive things like table scans, multiple table joins etc... then you'll most certainly notice it.

It's also dependant on what other things the server is doing besides db work such as webserver, mail server etc.

look in the contract, they will say you get the boot for excessive server use, going by their limits will be above that.

its the contract that you sign, not the up front stuff that matters

Hostgator seems to be one major host that offers unlimited domains that has been getting good reviews. Anyone have any bad things to say about Hostgator? Anyone know of another host that offers unlimited domains and seems to be able to handle it without overselling?

I don't as I've been pretty satisfied with them in the last 2years+ , especially when it comes to server stability.
