Hi everyone,
At the moment, I'm faced with a problem. It seems that the hosting company I use has been DOS attacked. He's been working on the problem day and night for the last 3 days. He's got professional people working on the problem from the DC datacenter (whatever that is) and quite frankly, I really feel bad for him. I'm not going to mention the name of the company because he had to physically remove his site off the server as a result of this, too.

My site and all my clients' sites are down and have been for the past 2 days. From what I've read about these DOS attacks, they can last a long time, and it's nearly impossible to find the culprit, although they are working on it, I'm sure.

I've only been with this hosting company for a couple of months. I've had wonderful customer service where I've been online with him for hours trying to solve other issues I had in understanding some of the things involved with my package. It took me months to find a decent hosting company that I was comfortable with.

My question to you people is this: What would you do if put in a situation such as this?

Curious,
DianeD

Sounds really bad, with costly effects.

I would probably try to accommodate my customers as best I could. I would probably offer them a way out. Those who are willing to wait till the attack fades, may do so, those want to move (and/or have backups), I would provide them with a new hosting account (from another provider). This might mean some costs as you'd have to get a reseller account from another provider, and some lost cusotmers ans some might move to a new provider by themselves.

As soon as I heard DOS, I would have immediatly moved all DNS to a new server/hosting plan with a different company and put up a temporary page. It's much better to see a page that says 'Sorry, having problems right now' then it is to have a 'cannot connect to server' error.

Then, when the situation is resolved, move everything back and resume normal operations.

Thanks for the suggestions - as it turned out, he has narrowed it down to 100 sites as to where it's originating from and hopefully, by now, it's even narrower.

My account(s) was moved to another server and I'm back in business again!!

That was sure scary!!
