When your choosing a new web host alot of factors come into play, it really depends what your looking for. Mainly what your main priority when looking for a host should be uptime, For instance at my company one server has gone down a total of 2 times the whole year which makes it very stable and reliable. You wont find 100% uptime but you will find 99.8-9 perent uptime. Be aware of ultra cheap hosting sites, usually these fly by night companys are just overloading servers and are gone after a few months.

Normal rates around now are around $5 per 700-800/ mb of space and about 20 gb of bandwidth

Another thing to look for is what kind of customer service they offer. Do they have 24/7 support? Do they have toll free support?
Also many hosts now offer a 30 day money back guarantee, so you might want to keep that in mind during your search.

Good luck with your website.

Things to look for:
-- Contact info, make sure they give you a physical address to their business
-- payment options, if they only offer Paypal... be leary.
-- Phone number, toll free or otherwise, everybody has a phone.
-- Prices, if it looks too good to be true, it is
-- stay far away from unlimted space/bandwidth providers, or those who offer insane amounts of them.
-- money back guarantee.. they need to have one and honor it.
-- Read their Terms of Service and Acceptable Use Policy very carefully.
-- Support, contact them and see how fast they respond. How well do they answer basic questions
-- Do they present themselves proffesionally? Their website and all correspondences with them should be proffesional.

Determine your needs, most sites don't require much more then a few meg of space and a few gig of bandwidth. Find a host that meets your exact requirements and then allow you to upgrade plans as your site grows. Don't be afraid to spend money if you truely value your site. After all, there's more to hosting then just the server. It costs money to admin the server, pay for software licenses, answer your questions and help you whenever you need it.

Narrow your search down to a few companies and then research them. Type their name into google and see what comes up. Ask here about them. Bottom line is, you need to do your homework. Make sure you really get to know the host before signing up.

The trouble with most hosting directories and review site is that they are very biased. They will either be run by hosting companies promoting their own services, or they are nothing but affiliate links.

You might want to try these site:

A good way to get fair, unbiased reviews is to go around some of the popular computer/webmastering forums, and look for a sticky thread like "Review your host" or something, lots of them have it. I know www.hardforum.com has one, completely unbiased, it's how I chose my first hosting service.
