Buying a Master Reseller is also a good way to start out, it can be a little more expensive but you can offer more services and you can get shoutcast etc

Nope. They are YOUR customers.
So:
Do you know anything about server management?
Do you know what rm -rf / does?

Can you afford to pay for a server and not earn any money at all from it?

Finding a reputable provider of master reseller accounts, is not all that easy though.

If you don't know the answer, or the request is something that requires root privileges, then you can contact your provider and ask for help. Otherwise, it's your job to support your customers.
If you don't think that you can be available to answer promptly to your customers support requests, I suppose you can look for a provider that offers end user support included in the reseller account's price. It's not something that many hosts offer though, so it will severely limit the number of choices you have. It will also mean that you'll have to spend something in the region of $20 a month for an entry level reseller account.

Would you be doing webhosting? or would you be looking into doing VPS, Dedicated, and Cloud? Web Hosting is a saturated market so you will need a way to draw customers in. Figure out what marketing techniques work for you by trying different free methods. Word of mouth is your biggest ally in the tech field.

What do you mean by "not earn any money from it" are you suggesting that it is not easy to get started with a web host?

Oh no, on the contrary it is very easy to get started, and just as easy to fail dismally (if not easier.)
Though my comment was mored aimed at this statement

Hosting is a cut-throat business, with a few big companies masquerading as lots of smaller companies selling their excess capacity and/or servers running on older hardware at ridiculously low prices.

Yes, to start a new business you need a reseller hosting to begin the business.
Usually when issues came from your customers , is better that you handle or solve your end if can because your customer only will complain to you and not siliconhouse.
Ofcourse you can ask siliconhouse for help but you still need to take your reseller responsibility to help your customer up to maintain them in long run.

A reseller plan is a good way, if the reseller plan allows you to put a free hosting plan, then you should to attract customer.
about tickets raised by customer, I feel it is better if you solve the problem at your end as long as you could and as fast as possible. Except for something that you can't solve then forward to siliconhouse.
I find that the main seller is usually too busy to answer all question. but if you could then solving at your end will make your customer more happy...

A reseller account is okay. But it's best to get a template, customize it get a billing software like whmcs and a vps server.
Make sure you know your way around the server commands and how to manage it properly.
If you don't know anything about servers, and how to run them. Then yes. I would get a reseller account. But also eventually get you a vps. Even a cheap vps server and play around with it until you get the hang of it.
That's the way I learned my way around the commands. It was very hard for me at first. But I eventually got the hang of it.

Actually you should start by looking after your OWN sites and server BEFORE you start thinking you can manage other peoples systems and possibly there livelyhood.
I doubt that any of you "hosting experts" could afford being sued by a client because you screwed up their hosting through inexperience.

Get a reseller with a host that offers end user support, cpanel and whm included. I've got a master reseller and all I do is make my packages and handle the billing. My host handles the 24 x 7 ticket, email and phone support.
If you know very little about hosting then I still say to get a small reseller with a host that also offers end user support, meaning all you do is set up your accounts and packages the way you want them and let the reseller host do all the support work for your clients.
I love my reseller account. All I have to do is..not much of anything but take care of the accounts just like any host does except I don't have to fool with the support tickets which I have very few with my clients.
I can suspend accounts, upgrade their packages if they request it, I can see their support tickets but I never fool with them, etc. I make good money with my reseller because all I have to do is pay for my reseller account and I do that on an annual basis.
As your client base grows all you have to do is add more to your seller package with your host.

Best way to start out is with a reseller. It has a nice WHM panel that lets you set everything up. Don't forget how to manage payments (Paypal and such) and a good template on your site always helps.

I think reselling is a good start for the webmaster but the main thing is the company to have a deal with.
Overall it's not an easy thing to start an Internet business especially if you have not enough knowledge for that.

If you are serious about starting a hosting company and running it as a full-time business you have a better chance of succeeding if you first gain industry experience working for an established hosting provider. Making any business profitable if you don't have *extensive* industry knowledge would be a challenge.

Personally, I feel safer on a dedicated because then everything is run by me and my management company. Then you know there are backups and RAID in place properly, you know how the server is acting and you can find out why its load is spiking. It is better having control over what is going on. Of course this means you need more money to start with, you have the potential to lose more, etc. You have to find the balance somewhere and most importantly you have to do what is best for you and for your clients.

its not an easy thing to do. I was going to do this myself until i researched how difficult it is. On top of that, the power bills you will rack up will be rather large, and at the same time you have to offer a competitive price. It's really hard to compete with big companies if you are in a part of the world where power doesn't come cheap. I know in my neck of the woods electricity is currently on the rise.
But to answer your question (assuming you are already extensively trained in hosting which you will need to be. This is not a job where money comes easy, it's hard to host sites) I found the best way of starting was leasing out servers instead of attempting to buy them.
