Hi, having trouble with FTP

Using Filezilla to try and connect to my Bluehost account, but I keep getting the "cannot connect to server" error

I have another Bluehost account that I can connect to just fine which makes me think it can't be any of my computer settings that need changing.

Any thoughts on what could be causing this?

I use Ipswitch Pro, once in a great awhile I will also receive an error message also. Usually for me it's the server or hoster that is down for a few minutes, but back up running again in short time.

You mentioned you have another account which is working just fine. Are the settings the same for both accounts, such as id name, password, etc.? It could be just a glitch too, have you tried it again recently?

It could be a few things.

1. The particular site you're trying to connect to was down at the moment
2. Username, password or both were incorrect. This is usually the problem.
3. Some servers need a passive connection while others don't. I don't think I've had this issue in awhile, but it used to be a problem occasionally.
4. The FTP URL could be off.

More than likely it's an incorrect username or password. That usually accounts for 99% of the times you can't make a connection.

Are you able to view your website? It sounds like your IP may be blocked.

Thank you for your replies everybody, it turned out to be my stupid mistake - my new Bluehost account is reseller and my old one was a standard account and the nameservers are different for the two. Changed the nameservers so hopefully that will resolve the issue

I'm glad it turned out to be something relatively simple. Sometimes it's the simple and obvious that we overlook causing the problem.

95% of all FTP issues arise from improper FTP URL, username/password, or port. I would verify these are ALL perfect first.
