I've had good experiences with Liquid Web and Hetzner, they both offer great support, and their servers are blazing fast.

Chances are that in this era of technology, distance is fairly void as a concern. The main concern is the pricing (in terms of currency) and in terms of if he will get technical support in English.

I have used VPS from SLHost for more than 6 years. They recently downgraded my account without informing me because the prices I signed up 6 years ago are cheaper than their current plans. Therefore they downgrade my VPS to "match" their current plans.

It seems unreasonable to me. I am now also looking for a new VPS hosting.

HELLO! Very new to the Website scene first off! I am having a freelancer build me a City Classified Ad website completely custom from php/mysql. Site is looking great so far and everything is going well! Within the next 20-25 days i will need to decide what type of host/server, how much ram etc. i will need! I'm looking to this forum hopefully for some past experience with classified ad websites etc. I understand that sites like these need alot of space due to the images, emails, amount of ads posted. Lets assume this classified ad website will be quite large with large amounts of marketing to assure this. I am looking at getting a fully managed VPS to start off Thank you ahead of time for the help.

At this time i am looking into Jaguar, Knownhost and vpslatch. They are my top contenders so far. Let me know what you guys think!

Since there are a lot of web hosting firms claiming to have the most affordable web host packages, it is quite difficult narrowing down choices. In this kind of tight spot, it is good to evaluate well the web hosting providers.

For some reason I stopped getting notification of replies on this thread, but I thought I'd pop on here and let everyone know who we ended up with.

The client chose LiquidWeb despite our recommendation to get with NetworkSolutions. Neither myself or my partner are pleased with the choice at this point because of the quality of their tech support (thankfully my partner specializes in servers so can take care of most problems on his own), their reporting (they don't hold onto reports for more then 48 hours, so if you have a problem and don't notice it for a few days, you're SOL) and they're hyped up "sonar" system (which can send you server downtime notices hours or even days after it happens effectively making it useless).

For us to move this client's massive website again is just not something that's in the cards, so we're just dealing with it.

Was WiredTree not in the mix for a VPS?

Moving sites now a days shouldn't be too intensive. Isn't it just a backup and restore procedure?

To the OP, have you tried any VPS's yet? I recommend you give some a test drive and see which one sticks before you commit.
