If most good web hosts respond as fast as they post comments in this forum, I'd say they are really on top of things on the business hosting side too. (LOL)

No no, they are either, just the ones that are desperate to chase business or their "shills"

@ Technut,
After reading your initial post and viewing your site, a few thoughts came across my mind.
Your post has the impression of self-promoting your hosting company. You have suggested that you have been in the web hosting business since 1999. But when I look at your whois data it show your, Hostmy1stweb.com, domain name has only been registered since the 24th of Jan. 2007. Perhaps you were operating under a different name prior to 2007? Still it leaves me doubting about your claims.
Upon going to your site, which is in your sig, I am greeted with a peel down advert. IMO peel down ads offer nothing to your site but annoy perspective clients or even drive them away. After blocking the peel down ad with Adblock Plus, I am viewing what I consider to be a very poorly designed web site. You might want to consider hiring a professional web designer to create a more appealing image of your business.
My comments concerning your hosting business are intended as constructive criticism. The best of luck to you!

Hello Crazypenguin, nice of you to take the time and trouble to research us.
As far as I can remember that was the opening line made in a posting here that was only intended to help others find some clarity to web hosting. Looking at all the favorable replies posted here I'd say it did its job by being here. I think posting an informational fact-sheet like that does deserve some kind of a qualifying remark from the person or business posting factual information. Most writers who publish post the source or show their position in the industry to qualify there facts. I could have used my personal 20 years of IT work or 20 years of doing business but I was trying to use the KISS method, and not advertise or promote anyone or anything as I see that didn't work for you.

Clams?, I don't remember making any claims in my posting. To directly answer your concerns though about my opening line of doing business since 1999, yes that is a fact, and yes we did have another URL way back when (still do). We had been providing websites to artists, musicians and bands back when our main focus was a Indie record label and recording studio under the name of Saddle Records Group, Inc. DBA Saddle Records of Oregon and a URL and web domain name of saddle-records.com. I suppose we could have purchased a old domain name or hosting company back in 2007, but we didn't. We just picked a new domain name to move forward with. Who would have though it was a major concern for some.

Still I cant help but agree with you here... funny how we think alike! As the peel-down you mention is not completely all my idea and may offer to annoy some people, some enough to take the time and trouble to block it in there browser. I would imagine it may not bother others though, as it is used very effectively on the main page of Web Hosting Talk, the largest web hosting forum in the world as I'm lead to believe. Another forum we offer our help to. But the peel-down does needs to be more modern in keeping with newer java scripts and codes.

Hey again Crazypenguin I couldn't agree with you more.... it is very outdated and certainly not cutting edge to say the least. I think it was made before there was CSS and just HTML, I think? Its under gone some minor adjustments through out the years. Kinda reminds me of back in 1999 again.... (LOL) Anyway glad you took the time to make all your comments and suggestions to us here in this public forum.

Yep, maybe some day when I have some extra time to kill I might drop by your work and offer-up some "constructive criticism" and post it here some cold and boring night. But not real soon, just a little to busy what with Christmas functions and church fellowship this next 2 weeks ahead, maybe in the spring time. But really I get this nagging feeling we have done something to piss you off. I don't know what but hey, really, we just nice folks over here trying to stay afloat in this economy and maybe somewhere along the way share some of our XX years of experience in this form and not piss people off in the process and limp along with our old style website for now. Besides I don't think a web page is what makes a good web hosting company. I think its there values and there honest hard work and commitment to their customers needs. Even if that is old school.
Best of luck to you too Crazypenguin!

it depends on a few factors.
In Exabytes, they normally ask for.
1. Email or Website.
2. Storage usage
3. visitors
4. what you are hosting.
this 4 questions is the key to what is suitable for you.

A great and very helpful article plus the signature link is also working for me I want to add, always select that hosting company that offers 30 days money back guarantee, 24/7/365 live chat and technical support , 99.9% network up time.
Money back guarantee is a good key to test the hosting services of the reputed hosting company.

Usually by re-using older hardware that has served (no pun intended) it's time on full priced hosting.

Really? $15 is pretty expensive now a days. I can see why they aren't making money at all - they are overcharging and aren't taking on clients because consumers now are smarter.

$15 for a year is absurdly cheap. Obviously that will be some pretty cruddy hosting. The issue isn't that consumers are smarter, it's just nowadays it's so easy to make a "hosting company" (using the term loosely) that everybody and their inebriated grandfather are doing it.

I don't understand what quality of service people expect at $15 a year. These companies offering this are just out to make a quick buck. There's no possible way to run a quality service at that price. It costs hundreds + thousands of dollars each month to provide support, backups, extra services etc. $15 a year isn't going to cut it.

We believe customer support matters. Try to contact your hosting provider before you buy. You can learn a lot about them.

Why would you contact them? They are trying to sell a product and many hosts out there will say just about anything to make you sign on the dotted line!

You can expect the server to crush for that about but still it depends on the ressources offered, there is no way to earn something when offering a unlimited plan. But let's say you are offering about 200 MB for a online business card, that doens't use much traffic or requires MySQL at all.
Over here in Germany you can find reliable and good hosting for about 20€*a year including a domain - and I'm not kidding. Considering the exchange rate it would be about 26 USD.
