Hi all! I am new to web-hosting and this wonderful forum as well. I have recently signed up for a free hosting plan with byethost. It's a pretty good service as I heard from others. I am planning to buy a domain name, too. Is it possible to have the domain name to redirect to this free hosting domain? I guess I am clear.
Your help is much appreciated.
Regards,
Abhisek

Yes, that's possible. With the free host, is it a sub domain currently? EX: yoursite.hosting.com. Can you park domains?

Most domain registrars allow URL forwarding also.

Some hosts allow you to use your own domain name, and if you can't sign up with one then check and make sure addon or parked domains are available.

I suppose that will be depend on the web hosting solution you are with. Some free web hosts do not allow such possibility
FYI: freewebspace.net is also good forum for the free web hosting
Good luck

The free hosting plan of byethost allows addon domains, so it is possible. Here's how you do it:
- Go to byethost and sign in.
- Then go to Control Panel->Domains->Addon Domains
- Enter the name of your domain and click on "Add Domain"
- Now go to your domain name registrar and sign in.
- Change the DNS settings of your domain. (The name servers you can use should be something like "ns1.byet.org","ns2.byet.org",...)
- Now you can use any FTP client to connect with byethost and start uploading.

Not each free web hosting service provider allow to have own domain name. But that might be exclusion and I assume that would be really useful to get in touch with the particular provider and ask and specify all details directly

you should ask the free domain name provider wheather you can do it .if you can ,they will tell you the specific step,i have done it before, sometimes the orginal hosting provider will not easily dropped your account ,so you need lots of time to struggle with them. good luck

I agree with trey walter. He explains all clearly. Just follow his step and you can use your domain with byethost as the server.

But don't do that alone. That is what you need to be sure beforehand. Just have a conversation with your web host before sign up

Better make sure and specify all details from the web hosting service provider you are going to sign up with

In free hosting you need to clear all things well in advance. Hence, contact your provider & ask everything which you wish to accomplish with this plan.
