This site is hosted by hostgator and I can't find any help in their docs!

I want to upload via ftp before the domain name is set. I can view the site temporarily at http://gator486.hostgator.com/~theSiteNameHere/
but they don't give an ftp address for temp?

I have tried many things with filezilla set up. I really hate those "uploaders" the host provides and have many files to upload(wordpress).

Thanks!!

The server's IP address appears to be 67.18.19.178.

Use this IP as the "host" in filezilla.

Don't they have one click installers there? Make sure you have checked that.
I suppose you do not need to upload something there

@ldcdc - That is what I thought too, but it doesn't work. It still needs to know which site on the server is the one I want. I assumed it would match the user name and password to right site??

@SiberForum - Yes, I did use fantastico this time to install. I usually set up WP myself. I just had to upload the theme. I ended up doing this file by file since there is not a "folder" option to upload, only individual files.

I still have more images and such to upload so I'd still like to figure this out.

Thanks so far...

That's exactly how it should work. Something doesn't seem right. I'd submit a support ticket and ask for assistance.

You could also edit the hosts file to workaround the domain propagation, maybe that'll to the trick:

As I was reading that and then I saw the comment:
Quote:
The Hosts file redirects traffic based on either IP addresses or canonical names
I was worried about that. Since the host is redirecting all incoming to the ~temp site address, I think it is doing it for the ftp as well(?)

I already uploaded the basics to get the site running and I will do the images after I can use FTP properly. I can use the site and view it, but not ftp files to it.

@ldcdc Thanks for the great video link, I have that bookmarked for future use.

I assume you also can use support option here and ask the provider to help you with uploading that. I assume that will not be aproblem for them at all

Before the nameservers propagation you can access your FTP account via the IP address of server where your domain is hosted. Once the nameserver propagate you can access it via domain name. Generally nameservers take 24 to 48 hours to propagate across the globe.

Thanks all, but nothing seemed to work. I will just wait to upload the larger files later.

I wasn't waiting for the dns to propogate, I was waiting to actually change the clients dns to this new site so we could fill up the new site with info before the transfer.

I really think the problem was that their server gave us a temp domain address to view it, otherwise perhaps the ip address alone would have done the trick.

Use gator486.hostgator.com for the ftp address and /~theSiteNameHere/ for the initial directory or gator486.hostgator.com/~theSiteNameHere/ as the ftp address. (I'm not sure which will work with Hostgator.) They should have given you an initial username (or maybe your account number) and password.

The IP address alone will not work if it's a shared hosting account. Everyone on that shared server has the same IP address.

That was the very first thing I tried. That works to access the "site", but not as ftp address the site. Actually, Filezilla strips the "~address" once I press connect.
