So, when i was pretty new to internet marketing i put "web hosting" into google and Streamline.net was the first result that came up. I was a noob and didn't really do much research and the price seemed cheap so i bought it. A few months later i discover streamline wasn't for me, so i switched to HostGator, and i thought i'd switched everything across and wouldn't have to deal with Streamline again.

But apparently because i bought my domain from Streamline, its still on their servers, even though my files are not - they're at HG. So i tried to change it by logging into my control panel.. no luck. You have to pay all outstanding debts, which is a years hosting + domains fees YEAR ADVANCE before you can, which is £38.40!! http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackha...w/confused.gif

Then i called up their helpline and they said the only way i can change it is by accessing control panel.. which i can only do by paying £38.40. Even if i'm not going to use Streamline for the year i'm paying for! Crazy! http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackha...es/new/eek.gif

Any ideas on what i should do?

I bet you didn't read the small print before you ordered from Streamline originally

Unfortunately this is a common trap that you're in, mainly because you didn't read the small print! Many many people have done the very same thing, you're not the first and certainly won't be the last.

The only way out is to pay the fee and be done with it. Learn from the experience and remember to research first before you get your wallet out

Transfer the domain to another registrar. Will cost you around $8.00

This is not a good practice from host's end. But if it is in their TOS there is no other way. Take this as a lesson and do read the TOS carefully before sign up with any host.

All techie gurupeople need to start getting lawyers. When I have a few on payroll I'll let you guys know, you can hire them cheap from time to time!

Seriously. We need heavier boots. Least of all against each other.

Make sure you see if andrei is right and just transfer the host by going to the new host to get it done - legally the original host presumably will just have to make the transfer. They can't really blackmail you the way they are doing (if I had lawyers maybe they could help you sue the guy for blackmailing you, which is of course called "extortion" in circs like that and maybe that's really what you could prove he's doing).

If all else fails this is your most noble plan - sacrifice that domain. Operate with a new one and when it expires buy it back.

however I think andrei sounds like he's right - you should manage to get it back and bypass the mofos.

btw I really dislike your page. As usual it's a page that takes ages to load and is covered in annoying slow-loading objects including tonnes of ads, particularly google ads in one's face as usual, as google's ads often are.

if i was being constructive i could say - don't you think you should make the content about acne far more in control of your pages than adverts and other secondary stuff? wouldn't your users appreciate that, don't you think? your site has excellent content - so it's a shame to let it appear, even if only slightly, to be as annoying and slow-loading as a spam site (which your site is definitely not).

since you are in the UK you could try the best host in the UK, reliable, award-winning MDs and amazing service, night and day, called Cerberus Networks.

I assume only 10% of the customer read the TOS in full. So that is quite ordinary situation here .

To change web hosting he needs to change nameservers and that is impossible without having access to the control panel. As far as I understand he is being asked for about 40 pounds for that

Hi,

Always read the TOS of the web hosting company and review about company from the google as after all that make a final decision..

In your case you need to either register new domain and host it..or wait to release the domain to available for a registration again..

Try calling tech support again and pleading with them. And then call again the next day or next shift so you get a different person. Don't lose your cool, be polite, play a little dumb (like a newb), maybe explain why you had to switch. Maybe one will have mercy on you. I'm afraid this is the "used car" side of hosting; happens all the time.

I suppose that would be anough to say you need backup and not going to switch

Well, if you registered the domain name with them, I bet YOU are the actual owner of the domain name, so they have no right to keep it. Just contact them with request to unlock the domain name and let you have the EPP key. Then simply initiate a transfer for your domain name to a new registrar. If they refuse, you can always tell them you have called your lawyer and he.... I'll bet they will let you have it in no time.
