Talking about the technical aspects of free vs. paid web hosting, it’s these features that categorize the two hosting options.
1)Data Transfer
This is the most challenging aspect in both kinds of hosting plans. Web visitors hate slow sites. So people who anticipate large turnover of visitors to their sites must always seek paid hosting. Such sites are visited by people, who have processing requests, product queries etc. In that case, if the site gives a sluggish response and the processing requests take a considerable amount of time then your entire online effort may go in vain. Bandwidth determines the pace of speed transmission, which is the call of the hour. Free hosting gives very limited data transfer limit. So it’s good that first you evaluate your bandwidth requirements and then choose free/paid hosting accordingly.
2)Disk/Storage Space
It’s the allocation of space that differs in these two hosting arrangements—free and paid. It depends on two aspects: nature of business and number of web visitors. If you have large online requirements then never attempt to compromise on disk/storage space since it’s an important determinant of the fate of your website. Estimate your disk/storage space requirements precisely and choose free/paid hosting. Paid hosting always gives you greater disk/storage space, which adds pace to your website besides freedom to experiment.
3)E-mail Accounts
When you choose your Web Hosting Provider, foresee your requirements and operation of affairs. If you have limited requirements, you can rest with few email accounts. However, bigger sites and businesses often need a greater number of e-mail accounts, which can only be obtained with paid hosting plans. This is an extended benefit in paid hosting when you compare it with free hosting.

Paid hosting will always be better than free hosting simple because the hosting provider want something in return for support.

Free hosting is great for newbies who wish to learn to manage a site with private domain and hosting, but if we think we've had enough capability and ready to "get down" on the online business it would be better to take a paid hosting.

I'm a Super-Newbie, and I don't even have my own website yet, however my wife has an online shopping mall, and wants to put my engineering mind to work for her, so she's renewing a $50 reseller account from iPower for me to play with, with hopes that I'll learn how to webhost for her as she'd like to set up a social network style webspace for small artisan types to set up their websites...(breathe!). Anyway, it's paid for so I have the benefit of not having to choose, but my question is would I be correct in assuming that it might be easier to learn with the support from a paid site? Or would said support be inconsequential, since I don't know what I'm doing yet, and might not be able to benefit because I've yet to learn "Web-host-eese"?
My first post....only fourteen more to go! Woo hoo!!!

well I guess no choice for you but to start learning, but if your wife has an online shopping mall already I bet she understands these things and you can learn from her, lucky you. I said what I said because back then when I started to join this "online world" I was a total newbie with no clues at all and no one to ask except from some articles I read online. So I used free domain and hosting to learn because things were still uncertain to me and I didn't want to end up wasting money for something that doesn't benefit me. I guess the situation is a bit different with you, and I think you can always ask help from the webhost if you find some difficulties afterall you're a paying costumer right ? good luck with your business..

That ^ is exactly correct! For the past 2 years I've tried Free Host after Free Host just to get a couple of different scripts to work. This is what I found to be odd / disappointing about 'Free Hosting'
1. If you have intentions of trying to make a profit using a script forget it.
2. If the script you want requires an SQL Database which usually fits into #1, forget it.
What I am trying to say is this, Free Hosting is available JUST FOR A PAGE TO PUT YOU AND YOUR PET WITH SOME TEXT ON, NOTHING MORE. WHY THEY GIVE LOT'S OF WEBSPACE FOR THAT PURPOSE, IT'S BEYOND ME.
FREE HOSTING IS PATHETIC IMO, THEY CHARGE JUST TO REMOVE A ; (semicolon) from a php file to enable that feature. Meanwhile, your stuck in the mud trying to figure out why something doesn't work. You have to email the hosting company, wait a week or two for a reply, then they tell you that feature is for paid customers only.
I SAY IF YOU WANT A SITE THAT YOU WILL EVENTUALLY WANT TO MAKE MONEY FROM, NO MATTER WHAT THE SIZE, PAY FOR IT, IN THE CASE OF WEB HOSTING, YOU ARE WAY BETTER OFF, TRUST ME.

If you are seriously looking for something biggest you should prefer paid hosting to free hosting.

Get rid of free hosting. If you have serious intentions you have to find a couple of bucks every month for your website!

Some times forced ads and sometimes you can't use your domain. Proper support isn't available. Databases are n't available storage limit.

Free hosting is good for beginners, and if someone wants to run a heavy site then paid membership would be best option…
