I've been hearing many good things about HostGator, so I recently checked them out and really liked their pricings + plans.
I'd like to know what you think of them and tell me of any past experiences you've had with them.
If you have any coupon codes I'd appreciate it if you could share them.
Cheers!

HostGator are good, although prices can possible be a bit pricey for some. I used to use them when my Web Hosting company was smaller - I had a reseller account with them and rarely had any problems.

Take a look at their Shared Plans. Never trust a host that advertises "Unlimited" Web Space.
"Hey Kid, why don't you get into my truck? I'll give you all the candy in the world."
We would all obviously avoid such a situation, and hopefully we were told of this trick when we were young. Web Hosting may not have existed back then - but i'm telling you now, it's a trick and a ploy used to lure those new to the industry.
Find me an Unlimited Hard drive, and then I'll stop bashing on Hostgator.

So true. And the funny thing is i remember a few years ago when HostGator had an article on their reseller web hosting page saying beware of web hosting companies that offer unlimited bandwidth - as there is no such thing! And yet now thats exactly what they offer lol.

I have never used them. But many people do. I suppose that you can give them a try.

I used it from December 20, to today.
Forum system: SMF 1.17
I had nothing but problems with their database servers. It took more than 30 minutes to get replies from their support staff.
Connection problems, timeout issues. The works. If you're planning on using SMF. Good luck.

IF that's the case, I don't think any intensive php script is going to work with their hosting. Also, from what I gather, they limit MySQL connections to only 25. Which is a major draw back.

I echo Andre, unlimited prolly means jammed up into someone else's virtual server. i do have a hostgator account but I haven't logged in in Donkey's years. I was disappointed in the readily installible click and play options, there was a lot of phone and cust serv dialing I had not expected.
I should say i am used to the Godaddy install temperament and the old school feel left me a little fugged up. That, and some trouble image hosting linking made me pause deciphering any more of it. Probably good for unlimited if you have an image gallery and you know that *folks* are borrowing your images on their links. Heck I have got stuff from my image site from Russia because somebody liked a picture and I get hits from there now. But I have yet to know anybody that parked a uge presence there and said yippy skippy.

I think that in this case the best sollution is calling their support and asking about that.
I mean better discuss the stuff you need to be hosted before sign up.

any shared host you use will be a hit or miss enterprise. Go for slicehost, or somewhere where you can get your own IP and dedicated disk space, bandwidth and memory usage. It does spike to use the available resources on the server outside of your virtual server. The only drawback? You have to set everything up yourself. I.E. Your server-side language, database, email system...
Since I have moved to Slicehost, I'll never again have to deal with Comcast blocking my site because of some other ******* spamming from OUR IP

If you are satisfied with your web host ask them for dedicated IP or another shared one just not blacklistated

i have had hundreds of IP's respond from Site-Lookbehinds and have had sometimes 900-1 results for a site on one I.P. Any sensibile person would resolve that this wouldn't result in a satistifactory web experience

Cause they oversell their servers, so a dedicated ip will still have to fight for resources.

To OP: You should search the forum before you make a thread here. Hostgator has already been discussed a couple of times already.
@ andre and x-terminator: Both of you are wrong. While I agree with you that the "Unlimited" thing is used just to lure newbies to sign up, a host which offers unlimited disk space and bandwidth need not necessarily be a scam. At the moment, a lot of other good and big companies are offering unlimited hosting. Does that mean all of those are bad? No. A web host has its own calculations when they offer unlimited hosting. For more details about how I defend "Unlimited Hosting", see the first sticky thread.

I been hosting a vbulletin forum for a while with hostGator now. there been some issues once in a while; but they seem to respond fast solving the problems.
its always a risk having a site with no-name web hosting. I have seen cases when the company shut down without letting the clients know of it. I rather take a few problems from big companies instead of going with no-name hosting companies. thats just my personal views.

It's not a scam, its just there for show. If there isn't an unlimited hard drive, how can there be unlimited hosting. More over, if there isn't an unlimited hard drive - how can you offer more than 10 clients unlimited hosting - on the same server! It just doesn't add up. Instead, what do they do? They limit you on everything, and purposely exclude the hosting of space-intensive operations.
If you're actually planning on using a lot of disk space - it would be wise to NOT go with an unlimited plan - simply because they don't like it when you actually use your "unlimited" space. I'm sure they'll kick you off the server, just to keep 20 other clients happy.
A host that is overselling won't actually let you draw close to what you purchased. Because, well, they are overselling - and simply can't handle it.

I've had a very small smf forum with HG for years, as well as a couple of Joomla based sites. They most certainly work. It doesn't mean that a certain server doesn't have issues. That may very well have been the case, but for a host with thousands of servers, one server is not completely representative.
