I have no idea what the main point of this is. But I wanna mention unlimited vs unmetered.

""Hey Kid, why don't you get into my truck? I don't care how much candy you eat."

While its virtually the same concept, the two words have very different meaning. While I still wouldn't go with an "unmetered" bandwith host cause only god knows how overloaded the server will be, it still sounds alot better than unlimited.

I don't know what my point is, but cheers!

I used hostgator for about 6 - 8 months and have a high opinion of them. The ONLY reason why I left hostgator is because they do not offer a virtual private server package. Its either shared hosting or a dedicated server. The price jump between the two packages was too much, so I had to find another host.

If I ever leave the host I am currently with, hostgator will be my first choice.

I was a reseller for them for a couple of years. At the end we were getting a lot of down time. I have been looking for a hosting provider lately and it seams like you can get a better deal elsewhere. Don’t get me wrong they were ok, but not my first choice any more.

Wow and how they explained downtime to you. I suppose that is my first time I here about their downtime. They do forbid lots of things to be hosted - Yes I have seen that, but never about downtime

I have to give credit where credit is due. I signed up with host gator again and it seams to be going fine. I thought I could get a better deal at slicehost.com but after 24 hours of trying to set up my own linux server from the ground up (with little to no support) I gave up. Linux is not my thing i guess. So hats off to Hostgator!

Did you try the step by step tutorials found here?
http://articles.slicehost.com/sitemap
I'm a web developer, not a sysadmin, though I've been using Ubuntu for 2 years now. But these tutorials helped me setup a complete Ubuntu Hardy server with apache, php, mysql, email, ftp, ssh and I learned a ton of stuff along the way. Now hosting 5 sites on my slice and more in the soon future.

Hostgator is fine, but someday you should learn how to setup your own server! If only for the experience...

I did, The nano editor is what got me. Just dont know it it good enough. I just started re selling for Host gator. I happy too. My domain names resolved in ten minutes. I had two sites up in running in under a half hour. Thats the way it ought to be, not half ot wote 24 to 72 hours. So what ever Hostgator is doing Keep it up. I had 7 sites up and resolved in under and hour. No Joke. I also get more space and more bandwith then with Slicehost. Thanks for your help things just kinda worked out. Cheers

Yeah i can respect that. I'm glad it worked for you. It's just that I personally needed a vps, and slicehost was the most competitive I found, you just got to set it all up yourself.

I did just help a client move about 30 of his sites to hostgator and he's happy with it too. Just have a lot of problems with ssh getting disabled for no reason.

Hi, new member here, just to remark that i had hostgator and then went to 1and1.com who i have been with for 5 years now,at least they were honest with me
unlike hostgator that told me it was ok to host ptc sites then shut me down
without warning.always get great customer servicee from 1and1.com.
just my two cents, thanks

I would never trust a host that was offering unlimited anything, I mean to a web host unlimited means only unlimited until your website gets to big then when your website is big your %#$&$@.

Lets think about this. They boast unlimited bandwidth on a shared environment. A shared server (let alone one dedicated server on a 100mbit connection can't push 1TB, let alone 75GB per month through.

Their marketing scheme is trying to brainwash those less knowledgeable, and it just isn't right.

And trust what I say, I own my own hosting company, and am in charge of the datacenter.

I think hostgator is good, prices may be alittle higher but they're a great company with good support.

They're fine until you have a problem, then you have to deal with their support which in many cases completely ignores you. The fact that they have "24/7" phone support isn't completely true, because when you call they rarely can help you, instead they tell you to email their support and ask them for help. So you email their support and then wait for a response. Many times I didn't get a response to my email after many attempts over a very serious issue.

Also, when you call they don't have any record of when you last called and don't have access to the cases you opened over email, so you have to explain everything all over again and they basically have to start all over on your issue, which is absolutely insane to me. Their whole support system is a mess IMHO. They are cheap though, so if that's all you care about then they're fine. If you are running a business or anything critical, I'd go elsewhere.

I strongly advise you read my article. There is no such thing as unlimited its deceitful marketing that lets them be number one when In reality customer support and honesty should honestly be number one on why you choose a host.

I lol'd. And yes that is very true. I remember when they said they offered 600gb disc space and 6tb bandwidth. Im pretty sure that if every one of there shared host plan holders even used 100gb they would be out of business.

The great thing is I register my domain names through another company in Canada. Host Gator is in Texas and I am in Pa. I used to have to wait 24 to 48 hours for the domain names to resolve to resolve. Now they are resolving in less than ten minutes. It’s so great to be able to put a site up and view it in less than 15 minutes. I like being a reseller with a good company. It makes it all the better.
