So I see there is another topic right below titled "Whats the best free ftp client?." I've been using FileZilla for a long time now, but do to issues I've been having with it I'd like to upgrade.

What are some of the absolute best ftp programs out there? It doesn't matter what they cost, I just want to know which ones are the best.

Thanks

In my honest opinion, FileZilla is really up there. I know it's not like me to state that something "free" is truly your best bet - however it just seems to be the case here.

Maybe you can tell us what problems you've been experiencing?

I would agree with Andrei. Why pay more if opensourced software is good and commopnly used?

Well, I have multiple issues with FileZilla...

For one thing, it gives me "Error: Connection closed by server" all the time. This happens if I don't constantly do something inside FileZilla, and I'm pretty sure it's a FileZilla thing because I've never had this happen in another FTP program.

Another thing which is REALLY BAD about the new version is the "file has changed" dialog box that pops up every time you edit and save a file. If the file managing thing worked it would actually be nice, but every few files I edit it uploads it to the wrong directory, overwriting the directories real index.php file!!

I downloaded the trial of FlashFXP, I'll give that a shot.

You probably have FileZilla in "active" mode and the server firewall is killing the connection, because it looks like a port scanning intrusion attempt.

FileZilla is the best free.
But i think the best paid is CuteFTP.
Or you can try FlashFXP or FTPRush.

The connection closed by server is also something that could be set on the server. It's a security thing to close connections that aren't being used. You'd probably have the same issue with other FTP applications.

Look for the settings Chris mentioned above and see if that fixes things.

I connect to a lot of different servers and some time out and disconnect faster than others.

Also, your computer could also be the case. It also closes live connections. I know this happens with me in SSH - however I'm not quite sure it occurs with FTP.

I am still using the 1995 version of ws_ftp-le and have found no reason to upgrade.

Since it is no longer available, I guess I would suggest the pro version if you want to buy something.

I'm just curious what kind of issues did you have with filezila. Trying to understand why you need something paid.

Another Cute FTP user here. I've used most of the popular free and commercial FTP software over the years but always go back to it, just because I like using it.

There's very little different between free/paid FTP software so I believe it's down to which one suits your personality, budget or preference.

I use FireFTP which is built-in to my Firefox browser. However when I have more complicated things to do such as chmoding files I use Filezilla.
