I have had great luck with BlueHost and ThinkHost, would not recommend GoDaddy.

There are the best web hosts, and plenty of mediocre ones. I've tried a couple and they were ok. Whats important to me are the scripts, customer service, technical support and affordable web hosting plans. Ultimately I think its more important to understand what you require, and then short list the top web hosts.

One of my web hosts is not a renowned name in the field but they offer value for the money and hence my sites rarely go offline...

I use freehostia and jaywebdesigns. Both are good for me so far. I am using the free plan and if my traffic increases iam definately going to buy it.

I used to be on Dreamhost, but found NearlyFreeSpeech.net. Cheap, fast, no-frills, meant for a more tech-savvy user. By no-frills, I mean no cPanel, ultra-simple design, a lot of things done over SSH, no fantasico or other stuff designed for newer users. But it is cheap.

Okay, back on topic
I recently signed up for a small reseller with http://www.deisehost.com - i host my personal websites there. So far so good really, i would rate them a 5 at the minute as i am still a newbie there really, 5 is neutral.
Im waiting til i get to the 2/3 month mark before i rant and rave on my blogs about how great they are and how helpfull Dan has been
Take a look, they are pretty cheap too.
P.S - I am in no way affiliated with deisehost, lol, i just love it when i actually find a half decent web host.

Bluehost: Rating 0.5 out of 10. I had way too many problems with Bluehost which included excessive continual downtime, email never worked, SQL data base crashes ans so on. Technical support is useless and could not solve any of the problem mentioned. You can read about my Bluehost experience here. I would definitely not recommend using Bluehost.
A2Hosting: Rating 9 out of 10. Great uptime and support. I have found A2Hosting to be very reliable. I am hosting total-idiots.com with A2Hosting.
Downtownhost: Rating 10 out of 10. Great uptime and support. Ticket response time has been between 15 to 30 min.to respond back to me and fix the problem. Extremely reliable. I am hosting inetintegrity.com and crazypenguin.net with Downtownhost.
NearlyFreeSpeech.net: Rating 9.5 out of 10. Very reliable. You only pay for what you actually use and as you go. So it is very inexpensive for the html sites I have hosted with them. The downside of NearlyFreeSpeech.net is there is no fancy control panel. I am hosting UnhappyHosting.com with NearlyFreeSpeech.net.
Uberhost.net: I have only been with them for one month so it is not fair to make a judgment so soon about them. But so far so good. And I definitely favor a DirectAdmin control panel over cPanel. lnxns.com is a domain name I have on Uberhost.net (no website has been designed as of this post)
I have been using Uberhost for a few test sites.

Webhosting is great, its one less thing you don't have to worry about, its better than having your self hosted site. Unless its a large website. But other than that my web host is great, simple and communication is great, just find a host that fits you. Dont settle for what is just there

I use Bluehost (plus another one), and overall they have been pretty good. Up just about all the time, pretty fast, never have to worry about running out of resources.
I can tell you, however, that every Bluehost site I've seen that hit Digg has been disabled due to using up their "CPU quota." So you get great amounts of transfer and storage, but if you ever try to use them, apparently, they will kill your account via CPU usage.
Edit: I read some of the posts about, and I have a couple comments. First, I use Google Apps for email, so I never really have a problem with that. Database has always worked fine for me. I've only noticed Bluehost down a couple times. And their support was very fast to respond (i.e., 2-3 minutes) when I requested SSH access.

My experience with 24Hostingnow has been good so far. The support team is very helpful and I've only had to send about two tickets this whole time I have been with them. The uptime is excellent..

I have a dedicated server from an hosting company in India, however the time taken to open my plain HTML website is over 2 mins even while accessing from India, I very musch suspect that what i have been giuven is not a dedicated server , since i dont have root access or even WHM Master Panel, Is there any way I can find out what machine specs are of the server that my domain is hosted upon by entering the IP address or domain name etc etc.
I desperately need help.
Regards
Tera

Hello Tera!
So you would like to say that you had paid for the dedicated server and did not het root access for it? And why had you decided that dedicated server is needed?
