I know that you said "approx" but I think a statement like this is misleading! As we offer hosting services in the UK and US then I guess I'm not trying to push people in either direction since there's no potential conflict of interests for me.
Although our US hosting is based on the East Coast it still gives slower load times for UK/European visitors than our UK hosting does - and this is on a typical website rather than anything particularly "special" or what you might consider latency sensitive etc.
I would strongly recommend that if your audience is in the UK, you should definitely try to host your website in the UK as well.
There are also other reasons to do this for UK / European businesses as well such as compliance with EU Data Protection legislation. This all but prevents you from storing personal data outside of the EU (and a few designated places that are also considered to have equal DP legisation - FYI the US is not one of those places). So having worked with some big businesses on this issue, I'd strongly suggest that you aim to comply with DP legislation in order to save legal action from the Information Commissioner.

The above seems to particularly apply to you as it looks like your website is an ecommerce site. Therefore if you (i.e. data controller), or your data subjects (customers) are EU based you basically have to have your database within the EU (or another region offering equal levels of data protection) - or you have to put legal agreements in place to ensure appropriate compliance with this.
I would therefore suggest that in your situation (as I understand it) you seek legal advice before proceeding to host your site in the US. Usual disclaimers apply btw - I am not a lawyer and nothing above is intended as legal advice. This post represents my opinion and views, but you should seek advice from a legal professional and I will not be held responsible for any actions you may take on the strength of this post.
