I am wanting to host my site in the UK even though I am in the US. Can someone give me some recommendations on who to use. Looking for a host that is reasonably cheap. It would be nice if they excepted US dollars or Paypal since I can not pay with pounds yet.

Thanks for your time!

Reasonable cheap with servers both in the USA and UK (BlueSquare, located in Berkshire)- Marblehost.com,
you can also check recommended UK hosts from b2evolution.net.

I hope you know that the main difference is price. For people fron US or UK you web site will be load in the same speed (approx)
Browse offers section here. And you can put request on WHT as well

True, the difference should not be of a nature that would bother visitors. The host's ability to keep servers performing nicely should be of more importance than distance alone.

I'd go for a US-based host as a cheaper option.
Say a 50-dollar vps plan in the USA will cost you around £50 in the UK.
It's rather odd, but there's no difference in price between UK and USA hosting deals in Marblehost.com plans.

Thanks for all your comments....the reason as to why I want a UK host is because I was hoping that my SE rankings would be higher for the UK based Se's.

I have a site in the US where I sell many different products including clothing, jewelry, sunglasses, etc.

I wanted to offer the same products to people in the UK and accept their currency. One of the bad things is that I would have to ship Internationally which would be a pain. But if I had enough business, I would set something up over there.

Do you all think that my rankings would be higher for uk.yahoo.com or google's in the UK if my site was hosted there?

Any other opinions on my idea?

Thanks!

I can recommend you cheap, but reliable hosting company Marblehost.com
The thing is that it has 2 state-of-art data centers located in HostCentric, California, USA and BlueSquare Data, Berkshire, UK. They have chosen the BlueSquare data center with only two things in mind: over-engineering and quality.

Thats right. A UK IP is good for higher ranking on google UK and other SEs.

UK hosting ... hm ... I know only Santrex.net provides hosting in that country. Good company with nice support at low rate.
Do you want to have shared or dedi hosting, as this company provides both in a quality way?

I know that you said "approx" but I think a statement like this is misleading! As we offer hosting services in the UK and US then I guess I'm not trying to push people in either direction since there's no potential conflict of interests for me.

Although our US hosting is based on the East Coast it still gives slower load times for UK/European visitors than our UK hosting does - and this is on a typical website rather than anything particularly "special" or what you might consider latency sensitive etc.

I would strongly recommend that if your audience is in the UK, you should definitely try to host your website in the UK as well.

There are also other reasons to do this for UK / European businesses as well such as compliance with EU Data Protection legislation. This all but prevents you from storing personal data outside of the EU (and a few designated places that are also considered to have equal DP legisation - FYI the US is not one of those places). So having worked with some big businesses on this issue, I'd strongly suggest that you aim to comply with DP legislation in order to save legal action from the Information Commissioner.

The above seems to particularly apply to you as it looks like your website is an ecommerce site. Therefore if you (i.e. data controller), or your data subjects (customers) are EU based you basically have to have your database within the EU (or another region offering equal levels of data protection) - or you have to put legal agreements in place to ensure appropriate compliance with this.

I would therefore suggest that in your situation (as I understand it) you seek legal advice before proceeding to host your site in the US. Usual disclaimers apply btw - I am not a lawyer and nothing above is intended as legal advice. This post represents my opinion and views, but you should seek advice from a legal professional and I will not be held responsible for any actions you may take on the strength of this post.
