What do you think will be a better option for a video sharing site www.cirtexhosting.com/shared.shtml or
www.hostv.com/virtual.shtml, providing www.cirtexhosting.com/ffmpeg-hosting.shtml as both plans seem to support it.

In the end, it all depend of the traffic you get.
But I would not go on the shared hsoting if I was you.

Video processing demands a lot over the CPU, and this is something bound to get you banned by your hoster.

Next, the flexibility comes to mind. When using advanced features like phpffmpeg, you might need to enable certains features of PHP (max upload limit size, or max upload time, for exemple) that usually shared hosting don't allow.

I'd recommand you to go the VPS path at first, if you have experience over Linux system (if not, found someone that has, because you will need it with a VPS) you will be free from all those limitations.
Except if the physicall server holds to many virtual servers, but I don't think any hoster will divulge how many nodes are running on the server.

I believe any videos need to host at least on VPS if you are looking for good speed and quality.

As someone suggested, it all depends on the level of traffic your site receives. Obviously if you have many active people on the server, your going to need a dedicated server.

VPS is basically a dedicated server with its resources split up equally for a set amount of people. If the server they put you on is weak, then so will the service.

There's always the option of asking the provider which package is the one you're most likely to fare well on, and explain them the kind of usage (including traffic) you expect in the short and mid term. (Cirtex and HostV are the same host basically)

I'd recommend going with a VPS for good speed, never run site like that though so not 100% sure.

Honestly I can see it start from shared and move over to VPS once it starts using up to many system resources.

I think the majority of the web hosting companies support video and audio streaming. I mean those that provide VPS and dedicated servers solutions (like HostWW.net or Rackspace.com).

If you dont have too much traffic, a shared hsoting would be good. cirtexhosting wont be a bad option.

In my experience with those scripts, you are actually and surprisingly much better off on shared hosting or a semi-dedicated server over a VPS. of course a dedicated server would be nice, but there is always a cost factor involved there.

I am seeing 2-3 times better performance on shared hosts than VPS hosts with those youtube clones that we have been supporting.

Actually, what he is looking for is FFmpeg hosting and it is fairly specialized. But a google search for ffmpeg web hosting or ffmpeg hosting should turn up a few specialty providers.

if you are having a video site, i don't think a shared host is enough for it, video site is a resource hog that might end up your site being suspended.

Why get dedicated or a VPS if you don't need it? Seems like overkill to me for a startup site.

Sure, someday a dedicated would be good, but do you really want to pay that kind of money up front not knowing if your site will take off?

I don't think that starting with a shared and then upgrading to vps will be convenient in this situation, as this will mean a transfer between two different companies, though HostV.com seem to be a Cirtex.com division.
I think you should consider your budget here, then the level of management offered in VPS deals and the level of control over your resources, like ability to enable max upload time and max upload limit size.

If you are serious about starting a video sharing site and you expect to achieve even a modicum of popularity, you need to go with a dedicated server. The demands of that kind of site on a shared server are too great and are sure to get you "turned off."

After that happens, all that traffic and all those users you worked so hard for will disappear into thin air. It's not worth it to risk losing everything because you're too cheap to pay for the hardware that you need.

Hey Zappanet,

I would highly recommend a dedicated server for any site thats going to host videos. Like nick said if your shared server got turned off you would be missing out on alot of traffic. Dedicated servers can get expensive but just start off with a small dedicated server and slowly move up to larger ones as demand increases. My 2 cents

Best Regards,
