Hostgator has a plan with unlimited bandwidth. The next lowest plan (below unlimited) is 6000gb of bandwidth. So unlimited has to allow higher than that. It's not unlimited disk space but it's 1000gb of disk space for the unlimited bandwidth plan.
It's not true unlimited, of course, but it is "for all intents and purposes" since so very very few of their customers will actually need beyond what they had in mind. If you read the companies' various responses on this issue you'll see that it's mostly because other factors are almost always the limiting factors. Example: How do you use over 6000gb of transfer, yet not max out the CPU? Not impossible but hard. They say that bandwidth is so cheap nowadays it is "essentially" free to them, it's just the server resources that always cause the bottlenecks. CPU, ram, and to a lesser extent disk space.
