I'm looking for a file hosting provider which will let me upload .kmz files, provide links to those kmz files, and have those files recognized as downloads so that browsers do not try to parse them. I also need download stats for files, and the ability to organize those files into albums/collections. Does anyone have any experience with a host which could provide me with that service?

I have no idea. I think that the only way might be dedicated server. In this case you need to have big budget. I believe that such niche exist. I would recommend you to put the same question on the digital point forums. I have seen your request relaed offers there.

A VPS can also offer dedicated like capabilities, in terms of control, at a fraction of the cost.

Start with VPS. In presales conversation ask your potential web hosting company about content you are going to host. I recommend GlobalTap.com. Have a look at their VPS.

KMZ is google's file format for Google Earth locations, placemarks, etc. It's essentialy an XML file, but it needs to be recognized, otherwise the browser tries to parse it and, with large ones, it can crash the web browser.

I'm not really sure how the hosting influences how the .kmz files are shown. Seems more likely to be a browser thing.

I know it has something to do with the host, because my new host (which I want to change from, reliabilty issues) does let them be recognized and my old one didn't.

Agree, don't think any host will put this on their web site.

It's down to MIME types and Operating Systems.

If the server delivers a ContentType of text/html or text/xml etc for the extension the browser will render it (or try to).

I think that you need dedicated server. Anyway you will be comfortable on that place for sure. And the option for you will be dedicated server with good connection speed. If you need to have your OS to be installed go for unmanaged solution. Try to find that among dedicated server offers on the Serverbeach.com, Globaltap.com. I thinhk that big companies like those ones I have mentored will be an option for you.

I have been using Hostgator for the past 2 years now and I can find anything bad about them.

I highly recommend them.
