I've used hostgator shared hosting for a long time to run wordpress sites - worked great so long as I used wp-cache or wp-super cache.
I just moved one of my more CPU intensive sites to mediatemples grid service - not really impressed enough to recommend it - as their support took over 30 hours to respond to a simple question...
I've used godaddy shared hosting as well - when we were hosting a replicated site with a video on it - it worked great - but required very little database interaction - other than creating the site. The rest of it was all static html and a video - I pushed 2 to 3 TB/month with it - with no issue.
For shared hosting I'd recommend asmallorange. I was with them for 2 or 3 years before I upgraded to a VPS. They have very affordable plans and GREAT support. (their support for VPS users, however, was quite different)
I'd reccomend razor hosting. I've been with them for a while now, and they're very dependable and quick to help with customer support issues (mostly my problems, nothing they had done)
I use the $60/ year package from surpasshosting.com. No problems with them so far. (: I've been using them for about half a year. I don't know how their customer service is since i haven't had to talk to them about anything. I like it, though. I would recommend them.
I have heard some good things on a small orange and Hostgator on other forums. Have not used them, but when I open a second shared hosting account I will give one of them a try.
