I'm trying to install a server similar to XAMPP to test my PHP and MySQL creations on before I actually post them to my server. I've tried installing XAMPP but for some reason I cannot get the Apache server to run, making it kinda useless.

I need at least PHP 4 with MySQL and Apache. Should I download each app. individually then run it like that or is there a better solution that is tightly packaged into one nice program like XAMPP?

Maybe you have another service in the same port of Apache (generally port 80). I have the same problem with port.

Forgot to specify my platform. I'm running windows XP on this laptop. If this was a Linux environment a web design forum would be the last place I'd be to fix this problem. Another is that configuring and compiling source code is a pain in the ***. XAMPP or LAMPP works fine on my linux machine, where it was mean to be.

Any solutions for a windows XP environment?

I ran a port check, port 80, the usual port for apache is free. Upon starting XAMPP i can start MySQL however I get a failed to initiate error message while trying to launch apache.

In the past, I've used EasyPHP on my XP without any problems. Give it a try.

Are you getting an error like "The application failed to initialized properly (0xc0150002). Click an OK to terminate this application."? If so, your problem is likely that you are missing the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. Download and install it, and Apache should then work.

Yup, installing Visual C++ Redistribute did the trick. Thanks.
