I've been asking a number of members in a thread which hosts they believe are disreputable.

These are hosts that people have recommended YOU DO NOT use. I'll try to give a source to each claim against a company and to be fair as well as the voice of 1 disgruntled customer can be louder than the voice of 100 satisfied customers. These are based on personal experiences or recommendations from our forum members are may not reflect the overall experience that other users may have experienced. Also note that we are not responsible for recommendation made here and that it's up to you as a consumer to choose your own host - we don't take any responsibility for this (legal stuff really - has to be said).

The web hosting companies listed are not in any particular order.

I've separated the current listings into a couple of categories to show which ones should be avoided at all costs (e.g. fraudulent hosts) and which ones are simply lacking important features such as support.

Anyway, here we go:

Fraudulent (or potential) web hosts
  • HostParlor(.com): This company has been highlighted by some users as being fraudulent. Sources: 1, 2, 3
  • Geekrack(.net): This company has been reported by a member as being fraudulent. See beneath for more info.
Poor support web hosts
  • 1and1(.com): 1and1 is a large hosting company, but their support seems to be poor. Concerns have been raised both from Webmaster-Talk members and from other sites. Sources: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
  • Fasthosts(.co.uk): see underneath
  • Geekrack(.net): see underneath
Unreliable hosts (uptime and/or servers)
  • Fasthosts(.co.uk): a large UK company, but with server issues (including security) and poor support reports. Mixed reports - some bad, some OK. Fraud has been reported but isn't necessarily true. Sources: 1, 2, 3, 4.
  • Interland(.com): a large global web host but with some problems with server security and support. IP addresses may have been blacklisted due to spam being allowed to be sent. Reports may be several years out of date and the situation may have changed now Sources: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
  • EzWebToGo(.com): this web host is small but one member has stressed that their "unlimited" features are far from it and that their servers can be unreliable. We currently only have one source for this though. Source: 1
  • Geekrack(.net): this host has been reported as being unreliable as well as possibly fraudulent. It has received mixed reviews but some customers have had problems with uptime and have complained about poor customer service/support. Sources: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
If you have any hosts to report yourself, you can do so here and I'll add it when I can.

Dan
