My first time with a dedicated box and i feel i am in a catch 22

I have the dedicated server running. The control panel is DirectAdmin.
In directadmin i have added my main domainname on a userlevel and on a resell level i created the two nameservers
ns1.xlshopping.net and ns2.xlshopping.net

The domainname is registered with Godaddy and when i want to change the nameservers to the 2 i made it gives an error. Which to me is obvious as the record for xlshopping is not pointing to my dedicated box yet so the subdomains ns1 and ns2 are not recognoized...how do i get out of this loop?
I tried using the ip addresses but those also don' t work.

Anybody know's what to do? I also will ask my hosting company but to my earlier question about nameservers i got this message

1) configure the nameservers on the server 2) create the nameservers at the registrar with the IP's you set in the DA panel 3) then you can change your domain to use those nameservers.

But the step 2 part is not working...Will also ask Godaddy but i know they are not always that technical and helpfull

I am fairly sure you need to modify the A name records of your domain in Godaddy and set the nameservers to the IP address(es) of your server.

I'm not 100% sure of this though

Quick question...the nameservers...My host said they had setup the nameservers..it looked like they didn't as i had to set them up in direct admin etc etc.
Do i need to do anything else to make it work? Like fi let a dns admin server know my 2 nameservers are there. To me it seems logic if they need to be identified as being nameservers so in the lookup proces it's known where to find my nameservers or is this done automaticly when i made the nameservers in DirectAdmin?

For every domain that you want hosted on that server, simply set the nameservers for the domain to whatever you just registered.

This should be sufficient to make it work. If problems persist, I recommend talking again to your host about it and explaining what you've done so far

It does take up to 24 to 48 hours for domain nameservers to update on domains when transferring and I guess this also goes for registering new nameservers.

Someone else more experienced might be able to help you here - otherwise, talk to your hosting company about it or Google it for tutorials to ensure you've got everything right.

Good luck
Dan

Thanks for the tutorial.
But it's either old or is using an other version as i do not have the same screens.

I still get the errors nameservers not registered.
Is there a place where i can check to see if a nameserver is recognized as a nameserver and that it's working?

Hello edynas,

Please let me know if your issue has been sorted or not ?

You will need to register your private nameservers like ns1.domainname.com and ns2.domainname.com with your domain registrar to make them accessible.
Once they are registered with the registrar, you can use them for your domain under your hosting.

Please get back to me in case you have any more queries in this regards, I will be glad to assist you

Thank you.

Hi,

I have the same problem. I also need to know which ip address should I use when creating ns1 and ns2 private nameservers. I have been given only one ip address when I signed up for a dedicates server. Then I found two more in resolv.conf file.

thanks.

What do you mean to register nameservers with domain registrar? I have a dedicated server. I created two private nameservers for a domain I bought from godaddy.com, let say mydomain.com. When I try to change default nameservers in goddady to ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com I get response that nameservers are not registered.

Thanks.
A.

You need install them first on the dedicatedserver and then add on the godaddy. If you a have managed dedicated yoiu can ask your provider do this work for you.
Cheers

You should register nameservers like

ns1.domain.com
ns2.domain.com

in your domain administration control panel !

Thanks for your responses. I did as you recommended and put ip addresses as the one I have been given for the server, not those in the resolv.conf file.
Now, for nslookup mydomain.com I get "Got SERVFAIL reply from ..., trying next server
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached"

Not sure what went wrong.

Thanks.

Do you have root acces for the server? Why don't take it easy and ask web hosting company have a look and take care of?

Yes I have root access. I have a dedicated linux server and all the setup must be performed by me.

I resolved my problem after restarting named. However, I want to host a second domain in the same server. I went to godaddy and put the same nameservers for the first domain into second domain's nameservers info. Now for nslookup seconddomain.com I get servfail response.

Thanks.
Alex.
