I'm going to change my hosting company soon but I didnt design my site and I am not very technically minded can anyone advise me on anything I need to check before moving? When a site is moved can it sometimes not work correctly with the new host- if so, what types of issues can come up? Thanks

You shouldn’t have any problems moving all your files to new host as long
new host support all the functions your site is using now.

But if, as you said, your site is needed new design, than why even worry.

Indeed, you never know whether there are different configurations on the two servers that could lead to trouble, and necessitate tweaking to avoid downtime. So, ask the host for a way to test/view the site before changing nameservers.

One other option would be to ask the host (nicely) to do the move for you. If the two hosts use the same control panel, the job would be way easier for the host. Still, they're under no obligation to do this move for you.

You can also ask your new host, after he create your account, to give you
FTP Host IP address to upload your files before you switch, to avoid downtime

Do you have a control panel with your current host?

I've moved many websites and they ALL needed tweaking, some more than others, so do not expect to be able to just move your files over and your site will run as is - that's not going to happen.

If you have cPanel, you can make a whole website copy as a backup and then on your new host, using cPanel, restore it. That's the *best* to do it.

Do you have cpanel where you are and if so, make sure your new host has it.

Good luck...

Most of the webhosting companies will help with the account transfers.

If you do not have any specific requirements, there are some other things you might need to consider like Good Support.

Good Luck.

The biggest issue is your CGI and PHP configurations
If you do don't have any CGI and PHP/MySQL stuff on your site, then you have
no problems what so ever
