I am currently testing out www.hostrocket.com. They offer free and paid web hosting. I signed up for the free hosting which offers 25MB storage space and 2GB bandwidth a month. FTP file transfers, or upload to a file manager. There is no banner or pop up ads with Hostrocket. They only put a line of text linking you to their site. I formally used tripod until i had numerous problems uploading my site. Then i tried out angelfire, which was great until they have now added an annoying web sidebar to go along with their banner ads and pop up ads. Not to mention lowered their bandwidth from 3gb to 1Gb. So if you're looking for a free hosting company, Hostrocket might be one to try. I had some trouble with their server going down, but they got back to me right away and fixed the problem. They don't have a website builder like tripod and geocities. So you have to have your site ready to upload.
