Oftentimes when I submit my site to a directory and try to be nice (or am required to) and give them a link back, I get the following message AFTER UPLOADING! Yes, I do double and even triple check that the link is online, works and all that...

"A link to http://www.directorylinkhere.com/ could not be found at the specified URL."

I've had that happen so many times I'm no longer going to even try. It's wasting my time, some won't take you w/o the link back so then it's even more a waste of time and there's absolutely nothing to be done about. On most directory sites, there's not even a contact so you can't even ask anyone. In addition, when there is a contact and you e-mail, no one ever answers. Gets frustrating, you know? Tx...

I do not usually bother with forums that require a link back to them. There are many free directories where you do not need to do this.

Yes, that's the direction I'm heading in now, also. I just always try to be fair and understand wanting a link back, but this has been happening more often than not and I'm so tired of it.

I just don't understand why they can't detect their link when it's on the page I submit as plain as day.

Just contact the directory owner & explain him the situation that the reciprocal link checking is not working & u have actually placed a link back on your site... & that really helps...

Tx RedSpider -- I try when I can find a contact link, but more often than not there isn't any so I just say bye-bye...

Don't bother with them if they require a backlink. If you are happy with a website, you should give a link as a "vote" for the site. For example, if you submit to my directory and are happy with the result, you could give a link "out of the goodness of your heart".

Time is money, so don't waste your time reciprocating when there are thousands of other sources. If your site is quality, directories should be thrilled to link to you.
