Hello,
I am a little new to this and need some help. I have been going to many free directories where a reciprocal url link is required for validation purposes. What i don't understand is the following:
1) Are we required to add reciprocal links visibly on our homepage?
2) How come when i go to any site listed on the directory i never see the reciprocal validation link?
3) Where are these webmasters putting these links. What is the generally accepted method so i don't have a homepage full of reciprocal links to free directories.
I am not getting something here. Are the reciprocal links put on non visible pages. How does this work. please help.

I would create a special page for the reciprocal ones so that it looks separately and neatly. But some directories prefer the links on home page not on the inner pages.

You could place them all on a single page, and them link to the page from your homepage.

Hi rfawl,
Look at other websites, and find the word links, click on that and view the page. You'll need this page on your website. Or you can watch for posts here in the forum for new web directories that do not ask for a recip. link!!
Just as a sub topic if you were to try a submission service, make sure they guarantee the link..I tried a couple, to save time. They submitted me to 100 directories for $XX.XX I got 5 links out of the deal..
There are some good deals out there but watch the crap.
Just like you just did ASK!
Hope this helps

Thank you all or your input but i still don't understand one thing:
For example there is a "free directory" at http://www.businesspagesupdate.co.uk/ when you try and submit besides teh homepage they ask for a reciprocal link url. However when i access one of the websites on their directory i haven't seen a single site in the directory where a link to the directory can be found ??? How have these webites submitted their sites? Do they have some hidden page or something?
Can someone please explain this phenomenon. What are the webmasters doing here?

If they are asking for a reciprocal link for a free listing, then the other links are paid. If the other sites you have looked at doesn't have a link page or a link to the directory, And are not a friend, partner,or the owner of the other sites, then they paid for the link. For example all my are free (no reciprocal)for now, except one. Had a guy pay for standard link, and had to stop giving them away. Not trying to spam the thread, can't explain it any other way.
Fill out the form, click free without reciprocal link , and your good to go...
Place it in the right category!!!! if it's about software, it goes in software!! not Internet.
You should be good.

Hello
I think getting Reciprocal link is good than free listings. They might create new page for that backlink to the directories. But if you dont want to link back, go for free listings (one way). Which is mostly free but try to submit only good directories of good PR. There are worthless directories as many as good ones.

One thing that you have to watchout for, are link farms that can be harmful to your site.

If a directory is requiring a reciprocol link then it's not free, and many directory sites start up with a directory dump and then go to dmoz or google and import links to give the directory an initial set of links so they don't start out empty. Then there are the link trades, the barterings etc, so it's always hard to tell when it comes to that, and alot of times I think sites that submit to the directories requiring a reciprocal they put it in temporarily and then remove it, hoping the directory won't do a link and recip check any time soon. Not very ethical but folks do it.

If a site demands I put their link on my home page, I just bypass it. A person just can't stick hundreds and hundreds of directories and other links on their home page if they want to be taken seriously and I would sure hope a respectable directory (or site for that matter) would certainly understand how unreasonable a request that is. Sort of trips my trigger when I see that...I know their reasons but still, let's all be reasonable!

To answer one of your questions, yes people are setting up webpages that are hidden to meet the reciprocal link requirement. This is something that I would strongly discourage you from doing.
As others have said there are a variety of reasons that directories require reciprocal links. Requiring reciprocals is in fact requiring payment for a listing. They are charging you in the form of advertising on your site for a link on theirs. Unless your site is a directory and theirs is a directory of directories, I see little to gain from a listing on one of these directories on your homepage. Consider this offer, I'll give you a link on an buried interior page with all of your competition if you give me a single link on the highest ranking page of your site.
When it comes to requests for reciprocal links of any kind, you the site owner must evaluate the potential good and potential harm that link can cause to your site. If it adds value - go for it. If it is totally unrelated to your site and can cause you problems with the search engines - give it a pass.

Reciprocal links are pretty much worthless these days. If a directory is requiring reciprocals, move on to a different directory.
The link in my signature "Free Directory Submission" will take you to my directory. You can submit for free, no email address or reciprocal links are required. Right now only a few internal pages have PR, but as the site grows, so will the PR and traffic for internal pages.
Don't worry about submitting to these directories that require reciprocal links. There are thousands of directories out there, so just move on to the ones that do not require reciprocal links.
Good luck.

Reciprocal links are new age Internet cons whereas only brainless few need to apply.

For me, I will create a link page for my all my reciprocal link and i won't add too much in a page. Seperate them in to few link page, so that lots of webmaster would like to have a link exchange with you.

And then what?
If I were you, I would offer your web hosting customers something for free
in exchange for tiny “Hosted by Me” signature on their index page bottom
and stop thinking about link exchanges
