I am building a directory and I would like to find out whether or not it is copyright infringement to just list a group of companies. Do I need to contact them personally for permission to list them or is it public information?

Thats not copyright infringement, you are just listing them on your website. At least I dont think it is.

Just listing their names isn't copyright infringemnt at all. In fact they will be more than happy to have their names on yet another site!!

As long as you don't list private information or claim it's your own, it's fine.
