Paid Directory, is it worth paying for?

Im helping to build a shopping site, and Im totally new to all this SEO and stuffs, so I had a look around, did some research. I did all that I could (submit to search engine, free directory, etc...), and Im trying to learn more.
I had a look at the "directory" concept, looks like pre-search engine, I actually have never used them (and probably will not). So I wonder if people do use "directory", and is it worth the money to get into those paid directories (such as Yahoo for 300usd/year) ?
Thanks all!

I'm sure you have Yahoo in mind, but Yahoo do not accept all websites, but takes money for review only. And what about other directories which cost 30 - 70 $ a year/lifetime ? What criteria I should check before submitting my website information into such directories ?

How can I get correct information about their traffic ? I know one directory which is a subdomain of a forum, so Alexa rank is not the main criteria to know the traffic value. And how could I check traffic in the specific category I wish to submit ? Any ideas ?

Alexa ranking is actually not accurate. You should stick to the traffic statistics and maybe Google PR.

Not really, unless you have an 800 number for your website.

Well i never bought a listing (couldn't aford to have a budget for this untill now) but yes it makes things move faster in Ranks and PR so if you have the money go for it
There many PR6 PR5 webdirectorys with fees like 10$ so if you search with not a huge budget you can get good and quality links

Some are OK. Submit to the free ones first unless you have alot of money to spare.

Yes, if the directory is seo friendly, indexed in search engines, got categories to describe your website well, and have some good traffic.

It's well worth it - they are paid for a reason, anyway. Usually, they are characterised by faster link review and a highly promoted directories.
Mainstream directories like DMOZ, Yahoo, BOTW cost a fortune also for a reason - high quality, invaluable, backlink to your site. Better backlink quality, better site strength.
My two coins.
Cheers!

Depends on various factors but yes, most of the time it definitely is because of the quality.
