Does anyone know which ones are worth paying for and which ones have a good reputation in order to bookmark for consideration? Your feedback would be of great value, thanks in advance.

Nobody can actually tell you that!
It will depend on entirely on the topic(s) of your website whether you will get useful traffic from your advertising or not.

First, exhaust the listings in free directories. Analyze the traffic statistics.
Then submit for some paid directories. Analyze the traffic stats. If it makes any difference, then it is worth it.
Since no one can guarantee you the traffic, just by listing your website in their directory, you should analyze your target audience and then submit to the relevant themed directories.
You can try PPC search engines also.

well, some of these paid directories are worth it, but then again, there are soooo many free ones out there ... submit there first ...
some of those directories do give direct traffic, but it's more about the links then the traffic

You must always look at the PR of the directory you are submitting to...

@ FunnyGuy - That's too bad! But does your yahoo directory submission brought you any quality traffic? I can't say anything about BOTW, yet - but the people I know thought that BOTW help them a lot with exposure and targeted traffic.

I haven't paid a single dime to any search engine or directory. All of my sites pages are indexed in ALL search engines. They ask a fee just to list you quicker. What they don't tell you is that you'll get listed anyway.

I've never paid for submitting into directories. Here's a list of Free Directories
http://www.directorycritic.com/free-directory-list.html. For link building, i use online press release, submission into social bookmarking sites and link exchange. If all does not work, then only i submit into paid directories.

the problem is: many people find a directory that has a index page with a high PR, but the page where your site will be listed is one with 0 PR. So, you should observe this.

Free directories are best because there is no need to pay anything. But when I was submitting my site to free directories I have spent may days in mannual submisstion still there is no guarantee of listing. Paid directories are fast and in most cases there is some guarantee of listing. I have submitted my site to < link drop removed > and got listed in few hours for $5.0 only and also they have submitted my site to 50 othere directories for free. If any one can get a service like this I believe it will be a good help.

Paid directory inclusion could be well worth it if the directory is well maintained, human approved, has high traffic, has been around for a long time, with high PR - just some factors to look at IMO.

I think paid directories are not that useful, its better link to related websites with good PR. Getting paid links from directories or other website are not advisable . . .
remember google hates paid links.

I do not think that paid submission is more effective because our main concern is to generate traffic on website through any possible sources by ethical and relevant mean.

well, the PR of the homepage is a start, but much, much more important is the PR of the page you'll end up on and of course the amount of other links.
many times it pays off very well to check smaller directories, especially niche directories, check the sub-category for your site and check PR and other links, it will take a lot of checking, but plenty of dirs out there that ask just $5-$10 for the link, as long you get at least PR2 for it and no more then 10 other links on the page, it's good. get 10 links like that (just $75) and you'll see your ranking going up already ...
stay away from yearly paid dirs, sure they help, but you can get much better results for the same money in other ways ...
