How do I get on DMOZ?
|

Hi
I launched my site in March and here is where I am by now:
Alexa Rank 86,518
Google Backlinks 11
Yahoo Backlinks 1,490
PageRank 4
More than a thousand visitors every day
I think I’ve done ok and this is what I don’t understand, why can’t I get listed on DMOZ?
Here is what I’ve done so far:
April – Submitted the site
July – Sent e-mail to editor
September – Sent e-mail to editor with CC to staff
I’m just in the blind, haven’t heard anything from Dmoz at all.
So please anyone what should I do to get listed? I’m willing to go pretty far. All ideas are very welcome.
Thanks.

Stop trying! It will either happen or not.
if you get listed all well and good, but be prepared to have a really crap title and text snippet in the Google SERPs, as Google very often will show the DMOZ details instead of your carefully crafted page title.

If all else fails you could apply to be an editor of the category you are submitting to. Although thats even less likely than your site being approved.

I'm with chris on this one except that I got great listing details, and took about a month to get listed on http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/O...ve_Link_Lists/ Check out the description.

That's must be quite a scam. It is not possible to guarantee a listing on DMOZ unless your website has the proper content.

The following is a quote from a DMOZ editor:
Quote:
|
There are a lot of myths and misunderstandings about DMOZ. A lot of them are from those who look upon DMOZ as a free listing service for a webmasters SEO's purposes ---- its not this. A lot of the criticisms and calls for DMOZ to change are from those who complain that DMOZ is not meeting their own SEO expectations -- DMOZ is not there for that purpose, so those complaints will always exist (its also probably the very reason that Google uses DMOZ as the basis for its own diretory and may give more weight to a listing)
|
Source for that quote can be provided upon request.
Translation: there's very little you can do to get into DMOZ. Submit your site, and it'll either happen from there or it won't. Any additional effort you make in this regard will be fruitless. So submit, and move on with your life, and you'll be a lot happier.
As far as that SEO Company goes, I don't see where it says that they guarantee a DMOZ listing. ORiN is right: this is a likely a scam.
Edit: I'm more suspicious considering that the link to seoindia's home page is on SEO Company's home page.

It just takes time. Some categories in DMOZ have tons of submissions waiting to be reviewed. Some categories dont' even have editors!
Your best bet is to do a little research and try to track down an editor. THis is what I did for our listings. Somehow I tracked down an editors website and found his screen name. Guy was real nice and listed my sites imediately

I know a DMOZ listing is nice to have, but you're probably just best having submitted and forgetting about it. The listing isn't going to make or break your business and the time you spend trying to get listed can be better spent in other ways to improve your business.

Our site has been live since 2002 and we still aren't in DMOZ, though we enjoy good search engine rankings. We have submitted several times over the past few years with no success. Our site has to do with Microsoft Software, etc. Any idea of a DMOZ editor we can contact that has anything to do with this? Thanks for your help!

Here's the best way.
1. Become an editor
2. Add your site
3. Ignore every submission like the editors do now.

If I didn't read the TOS of Dmoz then I would have not thought that there were any guidelines to your sites content after looking at some of the sites that are already listed.

I agree with you there.
Dmoz is mainly full of peoples homepages which are poorly designed.
Why would I want my site to be put amongst them.

You can do what everone else does to get listed. Become an editor, then add your sites and your friends sites...oh and don't forget to delete the competition if you can get away with it, and be sure to add secondary pages of your site as well. Once your done this, quit your editor position.
Or submit once then forget about it.
